300 RUM Sendero

Looking at getting a 300 RUM. My question is what needs to be done to the remington Sendero to make it a better shooter if anything. Or is it better to just build a fully custome rifle. I was figuring i could build a fully custom rifle for 2500-3000. Or buy a Sendero for 1400 and do whatever needs to be done and be a little cheaper but would it shoot as well? I dont see the purpose of buying a whole new rifle just to use the action when you can buy an action for the same price.

I bought a used sendero in 7 RUM for about $800 and plan to eventually re-barrel it with a quality barrel. You can probably also sell the stock if you don't like it, but they are not bad for a starting point. I would go for a used one, see what you like and don't like about the rifle, and put that extra money into the parts. First thing I did was put on a brake. If you find out you really don't like it, It will probably be easier to get rid of a sendero than to get your money back out of a custom rifle.

Also what about the Tactical Long range rifle from remington. Is it better or worse then the Sendero?

+1 on the used Sendero! I've done that twice now and will do it again.

I had a Krieger put on the old 25-06, it has an aluminum bedding block but I had it skim bedded after reading opinions here, also had the factory trigger tweaked down to 2.5lbs.
It shoots far better than I do.

I had a new style Sendero in.223 I had the bedding and trigger work done on that one too.
I wish I hadn't let that one get away.

Going to do at least one more!

One caveat tho, the J locks on the new style are hated by most,with good reason.

First off either find a good smith and have them work the trigger over or get a timney or a jewell, I went with a jewell because the smith I first went with would not take the trigger below 3lbs, some say thats plenty for hunting, I say use what ever your comfortable with. I have my jewell set at about 12oz and love it. I also went with a nightforce 20moa rail and rings. The next thing you need to decide on is the bullets your going to shoot. My gun did not like bergers, it likes accubonds, barnes TTSX and 208gr A-Max. Then comes powders, Retumbo, H1000, RL25, RL22. Now if you decide to shoot 180gr accubonds then the powder that seems to work the best is IMR4350. I have put alot of rounds down mine. If your going to use longer ammo then you have to consider the wyatt extended box magazine, very easy to install. You might also consider a removeable magazine box, I am thinking about that for mine, some people will say put a muzzle brake on, well I had the first smith I used put one on and he messed it up real bad, its being cut off as we speak. I don't think the recoil is that bad. When the barrel is finally shot out I will go with a 28 inch broughton. You will find you either like the palm swell or you hate it. Myself I am on the fence with that one. There are some nice light stocks to consider. You will also want to get a bipod for it and a really comfortable sling. Bota, thank you for adding that one, I want to get one also but my gun is back in the smiths shop being reworked from the first smith that screwed it up. Did you put the cheek piece on yourself??? does not look too hard to do. Thats my next addon to my sendero.

scope out Gunbroker, you may get a Sendero in 300 RUM for $1000 to $1100 (New)...

Nice rifles to be sure, just sold my .270 win Sendero (bought in '96 or so when they came out)...

To the gentleman who said even a Sendero should have a Skim bedding job... THANK YOU !! Dang I hate gunsmiths that don't keep up with the times or can't read... Or maybe he just didn't want to do it...

My son's rifle is a Sendero in 2506. It could shoot about 1 inch at 300 yards at day one. Brand of bullet did not not make any difference. It has been an easy rifle to reload for.

I got a new sendaro in 300 rum,had D Holland put a brake on it ,then had a buddy spray my stock,camo,put a night force 20 moa rail on it,nf 5.5 nxs on it .then a bors from barrett .rattel canned the barrel and action.Been shooting it a lot lately .my best load is 210 burger ,weight sorted neck sized REM brass .fed 215 or 215 match primers as both primers had the same es and pretty much the same velocity .es - 17 mv - 2980 .oh yea 89.5 grs h1000. And I almost forgot a befensive edge check piece.this us just what I did its ok there's a not better long range rigs out there.but iam happy with it .It's worked great so far for me .my longest coyote is 821 yard but I know I can do so much better .The sendaro has been a great gun for me .good luck in your indevers.

The first thing you need to do is get rid of that stock that comes with it and send it to a good smith. If your not Sampson I would get a brake for it. And to be honest although I like mine you might be better off getting a custom gun. If your looking for bench rest results try a different caliber the 300 is not built for bench rest results it will shoot decent and will reach out and touch a lot of things. ;

Be careful with your powder selection I used some IMR-4350 as a best powder recom.from Nosler 6th edition, against my better judgement. Its a moderate burning powder and its to fast for the case vol of the 300 RUM. Good Luck the 300 is hard to beat when you get it all dialed in

I bought a used 7mm Rem Mag Sendero + Sightron SII scope for, um, a lot less than anyone should pay. So, if you check locally or on various boards you may find a deal like I did.

Mine will shoot just over 1 inch groups at 200 yards with factory loads. This is unbedded but with the factory trigger having been tuned by a nationally known gunsmith. I can't wait until I eventually bed it and develop handloads for it.

So, be on the lookout for one and someday you'll be well on your way to a nice long range rifle that doesn't cost a bundle.
