I gotta do a better job of making sure I have my EDGE solid on my shoulder while shooting prone. I'm sporting a nice smile over my eye! :D
 
That sucks!
My sporter weight unbraked 300 RUM got me pretty good 2 years ago when I killed my CO elk. Had to get in a funky position to make the shot. Still have a scar from that one...
 
when shooting prone, lots of extra clothes on, shooting up hill etc, it is easy to do. Most of us have done it atleast once!

Besides the headache you got, it was still a blast! wow, we saw a lot of moose!
 
Ouch... I got the first shot my good friend (trebark on here) fired from his sporter unbraked 300 RUM on video. 4.5" eye relief doesn't help if the stock doesn't fit and the scope hits you in the nose. Was lucky it didn't break or bust open the skin! Cool video though :D
 
Ever shoot a blackpowder inline with a 250 gr.projectile over 100 grs by volume of BH209 WITH the ramrod left in the barrel? Just say the bloodtrail was a good one..
 
If you set the eye relief all the way forward so that you have to move your head a little
forward it will take the slack out of your neck and prevent your head from moving forward
under recoil and also help prevent getting kissed by the scope when shooting in the prone
position.

On hard kicking rifles it is a must to have the most eye relief possible and setting the
scope position to take advantage of it.

As mentioned the right length stock is also very important to prevent the scope from
giving you a ringer.

So check the length of pull and the eye relief and this should not happen even if shooting
from an awkward position.

Man i have had that happen to me when i was 10-11 with a 243 and a old weaver 4 power scope before they put rubber around the eye piece. That thing laid me wide open.

I was shooting out the window of my grandpa's old truck and about the time i pulled the trigger his foot slipped off of the clutch and man i bled like i got shot
 
by brother in law cut himself pretty good with my .340 wby. still has a small scar. But hey, chicks dig scars and the glory lasts forever!
 
Got this old springfield 30-06 with an old scope with like no eye relief... I've bled on many good shots with that one. I could always tell when my dad got a shot with that old gun- blood running down his nose every time. I just took that scope off the other day.
 
I haven't been nailed yet but I do get a reminder every once in a while if I get a little loose. I used to shoot a 45-70 in a Mauser 98 that I would load some cast bullets that were a touch over 500gr, also loaded them to the max and it got quite a reputation for being a hand full. I had a guy want to shoot it one day just to see how bad it was, I gave him fair warning several times and told him to shoot it off hand, so he leans over the truck hood and touches it off, it hit him so hard it he dropped like a sack of potatoes, I thought I had killed him, blood was every where but he came to, he never asked to shoot it again and he healed up nicely!

That's funny as long as it's not you.

I saw it happen once and it put the guy on his ***, but did not cut him.

He never found the ram rod because it buried up in the grass and soft dirt.

I have shot some extreme recoil rifles ( Well over 100 ft/lbs )and have yet to
be hit by the scope because of the longer eye relief scopes that I use( 4 to 5")
and a forward position for the scope.

Length of pull, eye relief and scope position are all important to prevent this and
on hard kicking rifles a muzzle brake may be nessary if shot in the prone position.

Hey J.E. it was me ,two weeks ago and now its funny. To make a long story short I had been testing with the BH209 at 50yds with great results so I moved the target back to 100yds. for final zero. Had the rifle charged with powder and the bullet was being rammed home when it started rain, which was NOT in the weather forcast, so with all my stuff spread out on the side table I got distracted ,started to hurry and forgot to pull the ramrod, total brain fart. Luckily it hit well above the orbital socket ,so it bled good and turned pretty colors but all is fine now. I cleaned it and closed it with a butterfly. Thats the first time I have ever been scope bit, that recoil was a lot worse than the 375 H& H or the 458 mag that I have shot,, like Forest said,,, Stupid is what stupid does..

It's good to laugh at ones self every now and then. The trouble is, I get to do it often.

Some people think that a Black powder rifle will not kick bad but I know better and so do
you now.

I have a 45/120 sharps that will rock your world with a 620gr bullet and a full load of BP
(120grs) so I can imagine what it did with the weight of the ram rod.

Mine has tang sights and every now and then I find it folded down after a shot.

PS: What kind of groups do you get with the ram rod. Ha Ha Ha.
