i like a short barreled rifle. i have a remington ADL that i'm thinking of shortening the barrel. what are your thoughts on a 20" to 22" 7mm mag. will it not burn powder? lose to much fps?

22" Wouldn't be terrible but a 20" would be a flame thrower I would think. From a 24"
I think you will see a 400 fps loss in the 20". Maybe a 100- to 150 in the 22". Just
an educated guess on my part.

If you want magnum performance from a short barrel go with a 7 WSM, or 7 SAUM. Using the 7 Rem Mag with such a short barrel is just going to waste powder.

with a powder adjustment (burn rate), I doubt you'd see 200fps between a 20" and a 24" barrel, but I think the 22" barrel length would come out better with the idea of having a better range of powders to work with. Still something like H414 might surprise you. I'm sure somebody has chambered a Striker in 7mm mag on here, and that might be a good starting point for data.

I saw a 150 fps loss going from a 26 to a 24.5 inch barrel on a 7stw. When you get into
overbores the losses can be dramatic. No way to gain it back with faster powders as the
pressures get really high.
