I have been shooting with Leupold VH reticles out to 500yds for several years, but want to start extending my range. I going to send one of my scopes to Leupold for the CDS dial. I have a good rangefinder and wind meter but wondered what PDA's and ballistics programs people here are using.

Thanks!

i use the dell axim x30 and my friends have a couple x51's. craigslist or ebay, usually around $60 bucks with an extra battery and charging cradle etc. we are using the exbal program.

Your other options are an iTouch or iPhone and get iSnipe or Bullet flight for a couple of bucks.
Or get an android phone and get shooter for $10. Brian Litz rates this program and there is a thread on here somewhere about it.

Stu.

I think you'll find the majority of the guys around here use either LoadBase or Exbal. LoadBase runs under the Windows platform. Exbal has a version for Windows and another version for Palms.

There are several software packages for the Iphone/Itouch and my hunting buddy uses Bullet Flite on his ITouch and likes it just fine. I usually use LoadBase on a Dell Axim in the field, plus on my PC at home. I also use Shooter on my HTC Evo Android and it's also a great program but when it gets right down to it I pull out the Dell Axim with LoadBase on it.

Most of them get the job done, especially at shorter ranges but you may find that one or two work better for you at longer ranges and under widely varied conditions.

Whatever you use just remember that the data you put in has to be correct and the way you use the software can determine whether or not it works satisfactorily for you. Use the search feature and you'll find a ton of information. :)

I am excellent at breaking cell phones in my pocket on the ranch, so I think I would want a separate PDA I could carry in my daypack.

The Dell Axim sounds popular so far so I'll probably look at those. Once I have one do I just purchase Exbal on my PC and transfer it, and if so what type cord do I need for the Axim. I want to make sure I get what accessories are necessary with the Axim when I buy one.

Thanks again, Heath

If you go with Exbal on a Dell Axim you will just need a USB cord to connect it to the computer for the installation. You get Exbal for the PC and another version for the PPC. You can either buy them separate or together as a package. My Dell came with a charging station that also hooks to the PC via USB.

I used the iPaq and exbal with great confidence. The software is very pleasing to used. If I missed it was the "wind's" fault.:)

Due to the age of the iPaq and seemingly short battery life, especially in cold weather I switched to the iPod touch and Ballistic FTE. FTE uses the JBM algorithms and is well respected.

The feature of this combo that does away with another LRH piece of gear is the automatic shot angle compensation. Pretty nerdy kewl!

As I usually shot from a hide there is plenty of time to determine shooting angles. With the fore end bottom parallel with the bore, hold the iPod against the fore end and watch the numbers change.

Im moving to the IPOD TOUCH. Its what the US ARMY is issuing now for field use. Everything else I have dies and no one in making a PDA anymore. If you have a crackberry you can run exbal but I dont have a smart phone and I refuse to pay another 30$ month to have one. IPOD TOUCH with I flight

Do you need to have cell phone service for the program to work on the i Pod? I don't have a cell phone and doubt I ever will.

NO beacuse its not a cell phone. Its like an PDA but for music. You can down load any applications apple offers from your computer to the IPOD. Like the
I FLIGHT ballistics calluculator. They offer an 8g model for around 200$ if you shop around. I intend to get mine right from apple on line they will engrave the back of the IPOD with any thing you want to make it yours.
