I have been thinking about this alot lately. What is the most powerful long range hunting rifle we can build on a short action with a WSM bolt face? Single round loading is ok. But we are not talking long action rounds.

A WILDCAT Is what I'm thinking. What say you?

Maybe something based on the 300 RUM case necked up to a 300gr Berger?:D

I just read the 7mm FATSO essay again. It's a good idea but the brass prep looks alot more involed than anything im set up for.

I Dont know that 338 is the best bet but maybe. I thought about the 338 and I still am just not sure how we would push it fast enough?

I know of a few guys running full round house 338 Edges on Savage short actions, I would put that in high power LRH class! You have to single sled them but they eject empties normal though you have to pull the bolt to eject a loaded round.
I was also intrigued by the 7mm Fatso but the prep was more than I want to do also.

I bet a 6.5 RUM would be a scorcher. With a 130 Scirocco it would be a true screamer.
With the 142 smk you would also be running them very fast.
Then there are the Carteruccios and maybe some new Wildcat bullets.
Not sure how long you can nurse the barrel along, but it would be a flat shooting cartridge with lots of energy.

Just to restate my orginal intent guys. I am not looking to chamber LA rounds in a SA! I am asking or opening for debate your ideas on how to get the most powerful SA based round we can for LR hunting.

Lets set a guideline. the rifle will operate as a repeter just for the reason of keeping the topic on SA length rounds.

If you want a big caliber there is the 338wsm
For trajectory you can build a 6wsm with 115 dtacs
I apologize for the earlier post.
When you said single loading is ok, I figured all was fair game

Ya, that would change the options a little! The single feeding kinda threw me to the longer side.

I had to re-read the 7mm Fatso article again and it seems that they had it perty well sorted out, you might get some little gain out of tweeking the WSM a little but not enough to really count for much so going with a larger parent case such as the 338LM kinda seems like the direction to go. Maybe a 300 Fatso? It'll be interesting to see what someone can come up with!

This kinda sounds like Kirby's department!

I got some parts for a 338 Norma mag the other day and I threw a case in my Savage model 12 and believe it or not I think you could make it work as a repeater with the 180-200gr bullets. I was also contemplating the 338-300 WSM this evening as I was lugging my 13 lb LR rifle up the mountain to say hi to herd of elk.

How about the Lazzeroni short action cases? Looking at their spec page they are pretty powerful.

284 Tomahawk 160 gr bullet @ 3152 140 gr bullet @ 3379

308 Patriot 180 gr bullet @ 3184 200 gr bullet @ 3012

338 Galaxy 225 gr bullet @ 2968 250 gr bullet @ 2761

All test barrels were 24" long

I have no idea if the reamer is proprietary or not. The brass IS pricey at 49.99 per 20.
Bet the feed rails will need work.

Interesting thread. I would think the 338 Norma case to work off of would be a good choice for a 338.
My question is why is it so important to use a SA?
Do you think you really save much weight over a LA ?
