I have been using H414 on some home loads with some mixed results, I mentioned this whilst at Norman Clarkes (Local Top Draw Gunsmith) and was told I should be using Magnum primers on H414 as its a ball type powder.

Has anyone else in here had mixed bags using H414 without magnum primers ???

Can anyone recommend a primer they have had good reSults with on H414 ???

i was told 20 years ago to use a magnum primer for ball powders which 414 is so i do and actually i shoot a magnum primer out of everything except 223 of course. also i only have to buy one kind of primers.

I started using magnum primers in my .308. Seems to work well. To answer the question above. There is nothing wrong with using mag primers in everything. You just have to adjust powder combos a little to match up. A max load in a manual will be a little lower when using a mag primer.

Lapua sells 308 brass with the small rifle primer. I believe it also has a smaller primer hole. This is for the target shooters who need premium accuracy. So the way I see it is that a hotter than necessary primer might mess with accuracy, SD and/or ES.

That is a good point and I am inclined to agree with your line of thought.
