First 22-250 where to start? Looking for some suggestions.

It is my first 22-250 and third bolt rifle. I'm liking bergers 55 grn varmint and target match bullets. I don't know what powder to use. Open to suggestions.

What twist rate do you have? If it's a 1-14, 55 gr bergers maybe to long for that twist rate. Try varget and 40 to 50 gr V-max. And IMR 8208XBR is a good non temperature sinsitive powder.gun)

I have loaded for several 22/250Rems but always used 50 grain cup-n-core hollowpoint bullets: i.e. 50 grain Remington Powerloct. I have found excellent accuracy in all of these rifles with H-4895 powder. My son's Savage will shoot in .5" five shot groups at 200 yds. and my custom will shot one ragged hole at 100 yds. I have found accuracy in the 35 to 36 grain charge weight range. H4895 is listed as one of Hodgdon's "Extreme" powders and shows very little temperature sensitivity even when loads are developed at 35 degrees and then shot on the prairie dog field at 90+ degrees.

BTW, I agree with 7 Loader that you may have trouble stabilizing the 55 grain Bergers with a 1/14" twist barrel, and every over-the-counter rifle I am aware of sports a 14" twist except for Savage which wear a 1/12" twist tube. There is only one way to find out if they will shoot in your gun and that is to try them. Good luck and hope you like you're 22/250 as much as I like mine.

I agree with the other two posters. The .22-250 is pretty easy to load for and very accurate. I usually shot the 52gn SMK for everything and pushed that with a max load of IMR4895. I never got great accuracy with the 55gn bullets and the 1-14 twist Remingtons. I got great accuracy with the 40gn pills and Varget, H4895 and N133 also. Good luck and have fun with the "Varminter". Rem 700:

22-250 55 grain Bal-Tip, IMR-4895, Fed 210 or (Win LR primer were good for 50 fps more).

If I don't have IMR4895 but have IMR4064 I increase load 1 grain and get the same results.


This load worked in 3 different rifles, Savage, Rem, Ruger #1

VARGET and IMR4064 work real well in a 22/250.

i have a remington 22-250 varmint sps its bedded and has a timeny trigger. im pretty sure mines a 1-12 twist i could be wrong though. i thought thats what i ordered though. anywas i use 35 gr nosler lead free bullets with 38gr of h380 and got 5 shot groups .5" and smaller depeneding on me. but i also use 38gr of h380 with 50gr vmax and get the same results very accurat and blows squirrels up i havent chronoy any of my 22-250 loads yet but im sure the 35gr noslers are 4000fps+

I tried to shoot 55gns as well in a 1-14" and never had any success

Either way, you shouldn't have buyers remorse. 22-250 is a generally forgiving and accurate round.

3900fps out of 26in Rem 700 VLS. It has killed deer, wild hog and coyote. This much Varget shows slower and some are going to as high as 38gr, but these are pretty close to factory Hornady Varmint Express loads.

I use 50 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and Varget in my Remington SPS 700, very accurate.

50gn pills and Varget seems to be what most people have success with. I've reloaded for the 22-250 for about 7 years and this is what I have stuck with.

I've had real good luck with the plain jane Seirra #1365 bullet seated over 3031 powder for 3500fps. Bullet is seated about .002" off the lands. On a bad day the guns would shoot low fours, and on a good day they'd shoot very low twos. The guns are from Savage, and the twist rate is 1:12. I have shot 60 grain Seirras thru them, and almost always shot in the low sixes, but on the otherhand I never did any serious load development with a 60 grain bullet either. I felt that a 50 grain bullet was a short (length) as I wanted to ever go with a 1:12 twist due to over stablization.

Lots to choose from for sure, but to keep it simple 38 grains of H380 and any suitable 55 grainer pretty much destroys anything small. H380 is easy to meter and all that etc.....good speeds too.

I've shot most everything from H335 to H414 (including H380 [ which I still shoot a lot of], but in the end my tightest groups came from IMR 3031 at 3500fps. I've shot a lot of groups in the low twos with that load, and the bullets are cheap
