Real Rangefinders

After hunting Antelope last weekend using my Leica 1200 I am so disapointed that I would consider paying up for something MUCH more powereful.
I need something that will give me accurate range on nonreflective targets.
Does anyone have any better Ideas? Are there any military versions available?
I'm using the Huskemaw scope system on my rifle which I just love. However as we all know, if you don't know the exact distance it's useless at long range.

Antelope suck to range!!! Vectronix is the answer if you have the coin, stepping up the the Leica 1600 may help, you need to stay with tight beam divergence units!

Well now you know how my wife and I felt last year. We had 3-4 big antelope bucks at around 700 yds and our new Bushnell 1500 wouldn't range a **** thing. I returned it and recently purchased a Swaro range finder. It came in a few weeks ago and I have ranged a small bump in a slight hill at 1745 yds. Last year we learned that the grasslands seem to suck up a laser, the Swaro is the best thing I have used so far. My buddy has a Leica 1200 and the Swaro whips it out past 800. This year we have the Swaro and a Leupold Gold Ring spotter, the deer and antelope are in trouble.

How far would be your max range on an antelope? What 1200 Leica do you have the earlier LRF or the CRF?

Yep. Mine works on rocks to 850, trees to around 700, animals to only 550-600. I shot my first elk at 683 yards because that's when I could get a solid range on objects around him as he came in. My buddy bought one also at the same time, his goes 300 yards further on any target type, go figure.

I've been hearing good things about the new Bushnell binocular rangefinders, but I wish I'd sent the 1500 back as well.

I ranged a calf, about a 1/2 the size of a pronge horn at 820 last weekend with my Lica 1600. It was in a pasture, so the grass wasn't tall. But it ranged him the first try. The ground is not nearly as flat either. But I'd be very surprised if the 1600 won't range a pronhorn out to at least 900 yards.

I have the old Leica 1200, and find if I keep BRAND new batteries in it, it works much better.

I always keep and extra 2 in my bag. If the battery gets below 3/4 power it struggles to range. Pop in a new battery and its good to go.

It will never be as good as the Swaro, But with fresh batteries it will range as far as I should be shooting!

Vectronix will be about $3700 and you still only have a monocular. Zeiss Victory RF binos are the best thing going in my opinion. Less than the vector, better glass and binos. I know of two guys that had vectors and sold them to get the Zeiss. The vectors will range farther but the Zeiss will do what you need for hunting. I ranged and shot an antelope doe @ 1330 yds w/on a pair.

I have the Leica Geovids and live in wyoming and I never have any problem with my ringe finder i can range antelope out past 1200-1300 easily any time of day.

I've hunted the Leica 1200 when they first came out, both big game and varmints; to tell you the truth I never really had any problems with them at hunting ranges.. As I got more into longer range stuff, I looked at many of the other very fine brands out there and settled on the LEICA GEOVID 10x42 BRF... these have been great in all types of terrain and weather.. the range is remarkable and the glass is crystal clear.. along with being far more rugged than I thought they might be.

I have a 3 year old 8x42 Geovid and a new 8x42 HD Geovid. Neither one will reliably range that far on bright days. Heck, they won't even range that far on my pickup truck when I am confirming p-dog kills. You must have an exception to the rule.
