On average, how accurate are the original military barrels for the M1903a3?

On average, pretty accurate. But if we're talking about what the military would call acceptable, that's usually around 3 MOA for typical issue small arms. Most that I've used would do considerably better than this, and I've seen many that would deliver 1 MOA without much trouble at all. This even applies to the two groove barrels; they shoot just as well, just look a little wierd when you take a peek through the bore.
I've got three of these, still in the cosomline and glassine wrap. Been thinking about doing up an '03-A4 (okay, so it'll be an '03-A faux) and now have all the parts to get the project underway.
You might take a look at Crossman's book on the Springfield, or the more recent works of Col. Bill Brophy. Hatcher's Notebook will also have some info that should interest you on this subject.

It all depends on the individual barrel. Are you talking a brand new barrel or just simply a 1903A3 you picked up. Many were just 2 groove barrels but I have seen some of those that would really shoot. These rifles are all over 60 years old and have seen very different service. It has been a few years back but I have seen some that came through the CMP that looked almost new. I have a Smith Corona 03 myself that shoots average 1 1/2 moa but it does not have the greatest looking barrel. My buddy has a Springfield 03 that was almost new looking from the CMP and it will shoot 1 moa or less.

What's the A4? I've got a 30-338 on '03-A3 (wife's grandfather's elk gun), but then replaced the bm, magazine, follower, etc. with original milled parts and somebody told me doing that makes it an '03-A1. Is that right?
I haven't fired this gun for awhile due to fact that not long after getting it, I noticed this:
Quite a bit of family attachment to this rifle and have been concentrating in other rifles, but need to figure something out on this soon as I'd like to have one of my girls use this for hunting at some point. Any ideas?

I do not think that makes the rifle an a1. You would need an a1 receiver and parts to have an a1.

Have two one a 300 win original barrel was 06 open it up to the 300 Win and bolt face.
Shoots sub min with 200smk 76.5 RL -25 Win Brass 215M. The other standard 06 shoots
a 1min on standard ammo.. Very pleased with them.........

I would not fire that rifle AT ALL until I took it to a QUALIFIED gunsmith. That split could go all the way into the main receiver. If it does not it may be able to be repaired by welding and re-taping. There is no way of telling what the accuracy of your barrel will be without shooting it.
