Hi fellow shooters,I've just discovered and joined this site hoping to get some valued info. Just recently i purchased a sako 85 varmint ss laminated in .308win, and as yet havent put a scope on it or fired a shot. i have a number of questions firstly an optimum bullet weight the barrel is 1=11 twist and i want to shoot deer and pigs also to shoot long range target. my next question is about scope power is it possible to have a scope for both hunting and long range? also i will be reloading so any tips in this field would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance dimce...

Welcome to LRH and enjoy! Excellent choice of gun and caliber. If I were you, I'd load the heaviest bullet with the highest BC that your rifle will shoot accurately (you'll have to experiment which one is best suited for your rifle and purpose).

150 gr would be my minimum and Berger hunting VLDs and Nosler ABs/E-tips are good start. I'm sure the resident experts will chime in soon.

Scope wise, yes you can have both and only limited by your budget and what you consider "long" range.

Good luck and happy safe reloading, shooting, and hunting.

With the 1 in 11 twist rate you can shoot the 168 Sierra Match King for targets and the 165
Accubonds for Pigs, and almost any other 165grain and down for deer (Nosler Ballistic tip.
ETC).

For the scope I would recomend any good scope with a 50mm objective.in a variable starting
around 3x or 4x and going to 14x or 16x. A 30mm tube is optional but I prefer them over the
1" tube.

As to the reloading, H4895 and 4064 powders are a good place to start and any good primer
CCI,REM, WIN, FED in large rifle will work good.

Thanks for the responses guys ,i got my eye on a khales helia c 3-12 x56 in a 30mm tube or a leupold 8.5-25 x50 again in a 30mm tube, i figure the leupold might be overpowered for forest work??? any suggestions dimce

I use a Leupold 4.5 - 14. I reckon it as about perfect for close range and out to 700 - 800 yds.
Look at some of the Bushnell scopes some of them have amazing power ranges. The Weaver Super slam is another one that comes to mind.
Re the Kahles, you might find the 56mm objective quite big, it will require being mounted high and then you will need an adjustable cheekpiece to get proper cheek weld.

Check out this thread for some very good advice on what to do with a 308 http://www.longrangehunting.com/articles/308-winchester-1.php

thanks for the info Stu and the link to the 308 article ...dimce
