PR 5-25x56 Gen II Mil-Dot vs. Gen II XR

The two choices I am considering with my soon to be here PR 5-25x56 are First Focal Plane Illuminated Gen II Mil-Dot or going with First Focal Plane Illuminated Gen II XR.

I have no experience with anything other than mil/mil and that is limmited to my time in the military and another job. Does anyone have experience with the Gen II XR that can list advatages/disadvantages of these two choices?

I've got the XR and love it. Seems to be just the right size. I dial the turret more so than hold for elevation, so I don't find myself using the christmas tree much... but it doesn't get in the way either.

If I had a choice, I'd go XR.

Both reticles are excellent. But which will work best for you depends on the application. Personally I think the XR is an excellent reticle for shooting beyond 800 yards. But I think it is overkill if you don't break about 800 yards often. The Gen II Mil-Dot is less busy and works well but but the XR is great for hold-overs.

Do you plan on using the scope much or at all at closer ranges? Do you plan on using 5-8X much? Any walking through heavy timber, etc with it? If so, the standard Gen II would be my choice.

If most or all of your shots will be long and the scope will spend most or all of its time on high power, I'd go for the XR.

I've got a 5-25x56 Gen 2 XR on my 338 and I wanting to put a 3-15x50 Gen 2 Mil-Dot on my 308.

Thanks for all of the input. I based my decision of the responses I got and called up Scott over at Patriot and I kept oy origional order the same. The only real purpose for this rifle is going to be 400+ shots and long range entertainment shooting tannerite.

As far as brush hunting or even hunting with closer range shots this setup is not the one for the job. For one it's going to be to heavy for me to be carrying up and down and all over the place. Unless we plan on hunting on horseback or antelope in Wyoming again this will stay home. One of my lighter brush guns and 30/30 have always done me good for that so no need in changing what has worked for years.

Even the rings make me salivate. They look so solid!
