Stretching the 308

Good shootin' orkan!
Long range with any rifle is fun & hard to do. Because of the lay of the land & the trees I can only get to 400 yds at my place. Anything further & I go to my buddy's farm where 1000 yds is possible. My Tikka Varmint .308 is up to the challange weather I am or not. :D I spend most of my range time at home with my Savage .22 LR MKII FV & the new Savage MKII TRR. The practice helps me when shooting the bigger rifles

I do not understand the theory behind short barreled 308's for longrange work because like most other cartridges, it will benefit from more barrel length.

Secondly, while the 175 SMK works very well as a hunting bullet for medium sized animals, the 155's in several brands can give you more velocity with almost exactly the same BC. This translates to less drop and more distance before going subsonic.

Fun stuff - my old .308 match rifle had a 30" Krieger barrel with a tight bore and a 1:13 twist. It would easily send 155's downrange at 3,000+ fps. Those 155 Scenars are a great bullet for stretching the effective range of the little .308 Win. The 155 Berger VLD does a fine job too.

I'm impressed with your thoughts on the real-world problems of military snipers trying to make solid first round hits at long range with the 7.62/.308 Win. They've got good rifles & training, but still, it's asking a lot of a .308 Win.

It's kind of fun messing with the .308 way out there, but there are better cartridges for the job for sure.

Regards, Guy

Bob I dont get it either. I do second you opnion on the 155g bullets. If it where me I would use the 155g Berger.

You are right, a longer barrel would lend itself to higher velocity. This particular rifle is my primary deer gun. Normally I have it loaded up with 150gr nosler BT's. I can get them to about 2700fps or so in that barrel. The short barrel lends itself very well to my style of hunting, and I don't give up much velocity to do so.

The 308 doesn't actually give up much in the shorter barrels compared to other calibers.

I have a surgeon AICS/591/krieger 18" 308 being built at LA Precision right now. Its purpose is not as a competition long range rifle, but a medium range tactical rifle. (800yds) That doesn't mean I can't try to make it go farther. Like to run suppressors, so a 24-26" barrel inhibits me more in the handling than the short barrel inhibits me in velocity.

Your comments regarding the 155's tell me that you've never shot them in an 18"-20" barrel. I have, and thus far, a powder/bullet combination that yields more than 2700fps has eluded me. The larger bullets suffer much less velocity loss than the lighter ones in a short tube.

I am well aware that a 300WM or 338LM would yield itself to 1000yd shooting better than a 20" 308. However, that does not mean the exercise itself is useless. I do not own a larger caliber currently, and I would rather be fluent and capable with what I have than what I might have later. When I practice, it is all about learning and fun. I practice often, and learn often. The 308 is quite possibly the worlds greatest teacher when it comes to long range shooting.

Show me where I said something out of line sendero. I haven't posted much here simply because I only post when I have something constructive to share. Was your only reason for posting an attempt to get a rise? Any other snipershide members want to dogpile?

I enjoy this site very much, mainly because people keep sideways comments like the one you just made, to themselves. I'll gladly get banned from this forum also if it means having to be harassed by you and your type over here as well. So if you have a grievance with me personally, send me a PM. If you feel I've violated LRH rules, notify a moderator.

Otherwise, if you don't have anything even remotely constructive and on topic to say, grow up and leave it alone.

I was just saying, don't start what you always do...

On Predator Masters, Snipershide, etc... etc...

Keep it civil here. No problems from me... just a note to self for you.

For the record, I'm not banned from predator masters. How you got that inclination, I'm not sure. Care to show me a single post on predator masters that was out of line? Or is this LRH I'm on? Don't let the similar color schemes confuse you.

Snipershide, yes... and it was slander that finally did me in there, not truth. ...and I can prove it. Granted I was on thin ice with frank, but I know that list is not small either. I'm fine with that. Also, I'm not the one that starts, rather I just refuse to lay down when attacked.

I do get a little tired of being badgered. Last I checked, this was LRH, not snipershide. ... just a civil note to self for you.
