This is a first for us. Coyote hunting without 3 feet of snow and -30 celcius! LOL. Must say, it was a nice change!
Our plans are to film a few evenings of coyote calling with the hopes of getting some quality footage for the show. We also had the idea to up the difficulty by adding a bow and an 8 year old (Zach) into the mix. Our first set was in an amazing looking place. All oaks with a large slough. We huddled into position along the waters edge. We set Jay up 50 yards away. Bow in hand. As if we had it pre arranged a mature coyote came running along the water edge right to us. Jay came to full draw. I had the dog in my .243's cross hairs the whole time. It looked like Jay was going to put another notch in the old APA bow. The dog was committed to my calls and was running fast to us. 70 yards and the brakes were applied! The wind swirled and we got busted! He was gone. Great footage of him though,lol. Could of been an easy gun shot, but thought it looked like a bow shot. We were wrong!.Oh well, to the next set. With the light fading, we put all our hopes in a large open field of tall grass. Not a bow place we thought, so the Remingtons got the call. We set up with the sun at our backs and a cross wind to where we hoped the dogs would come from. I let loose with my cottontail call. It was perfect. Jason(.35whelen), Zach and I sitting in a rock pile. Jay filming over our shoulders. He pans from Jason to Zach then me. On the return pan of the camera he catches the coyote coming full steam ahead,right at us! The coyote had a wild look of excitement in its eyes. It bounded through the grass right at us.70 yards,60,50,40,30,20,10,7. This is crazy! Jay stood up with the camera to keep him in frame and to stop him from standing on Zach and my heads! The dog's eye changed from oh,ya!,to Oh, no! He turned to make his escape. Jason know I had him covered at 7 steps, so he sat back and watched. I let him run abit for the camera, lol. I took the shot at 20 yards sending him end over end. Amazing hunting footage Jay captured there! We settled back in and I continued to call. Not more then 2 minutes later our next star arrived. Jason and I had big plans to double team this guy. 70 yards out the dog stood.1,2,3 BANG! A double miss! LOL. We joke now, it was to build drama for the show. I quickly squeeked on the call a few more times. The dog stopped and turned to see what the heck happened. Sun in his eyes he never knew what hit him. Jason closed the deal. Upon reviewing the footage we high fived, knowing this was the best footage we have done to date! Cant wait for our next outing to finish off the show.
