7mm STW 180 GR Berger

Just got a used custom 7mm STW with a 1-11 twist barrel. Will it stable a 180 gr berger ? What powder do you like and what is the velocity are you getting ? What velocity are you getting out of a 168GR In a 26'' barrel? Also which bullet will expand better at 900 yd a 162 a-max or a berger ? Thanks for your reply, Joe

NO. You will only be able to shoot up to 140 grain bullets with that slow twist. I would recommend a Berger 140 VLD Hunting bullet loaded with H1000 powder, Fed215 primer. Mine shoots this combo at 3430 fps with a 24" barrel. The 140 VLD has a 510 BC and will be excellent at long range with the extra velocity. The only place it will suffer will be in wind drift. Berger hunting VLD's are made for hunting and are superior in my opinion to an AMAX.

I agree with coyotezapper, it shouldn't stabilise a 180 berger, berger recommend 1 in 9" twist for the 180. They recommend a 1 in 10" for the 168.
You might find the STW can push a 168 fast enough to stabilise a 168 berger, especially if you are shooting at a bit of altitude.
A 160 accubond might be worth a try, it still has a BC of .5?? .

I have used the 168 berger and 162 a-max out of my 7mm rem mag. I don't really see any difference in performance or accuracy in my rifle. I will probably be switching back to the a-max as it is about $20 -30 a box cheaper in NZ.

There is really only one way of finding out.

I'll bet the Berger 180 is forgiving and will work.

Send them out at 3,100, that twist just may be the ticket.
