Ordered my first reamer !!!

Well, I took the plunge and ordered a reamer from PTG today. I ended up getting a 270 WSM .310 neck and .180 freebore for shooting 150 Bergers and 169.5 Wildcats. I also ordered a grizzly range rod so in a short time well have some amatuer barrel chambering happening at my place!!! Do they sell barrels in a six pack

The folks at PTG were supper great to deal with and answered all my questions and patient with this novice!!!

It's not rocket science but you do have to be careful and very particular.

Every one started with one reamer and a lot of apprehension.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I'll make sure all pics are of rifle making action and nothing in the emergency room!!!

This is the start of my first spec'ed out rifle, I'll be working with a Savage action for starters, I'm excited!!!!

The first one is nerve racking, but take your time and dont rush it. also remember that cutting fluid is your friend and you cant put back what you take off.

Kinda sounds like the measure twice and cut once advice, which is hard for me I kinda have to resist just laying into it.

What kinda stuff do you guys use for coolant, I've seen several different options from high pressure coolant that looks thin to a heavy oil just dabbed on when you pull the reamer and clear it.
I was thinking about making a flush from the muzzle set up, I can get the rotary coupler for cost and it looks like a good way to go. Any opinions would be great!!

I qualify as an expert witness that you can't put back what you take off. Slow, cautious and straight are the key words.

Is your rifle going to be a single shot or have an extra long mag box?

These 160s I'm working on are only about 0.015" shorter than the 195 WCsgun)

There isn't a much more satisfying thing to DIY and come up with exactly what you want. It's even better if it turns out.

You may have a lump in your throat now but it want be long before you will be telling us how easy it is.

I will be teaching a High Pressure Flush system class at TSJC June 7-11.

They will have the system in place for future classes as well.

It would be interesting to know how many reamers I have used in the last 35 years. I know my tool box has several hundred reamers in it. Some with 1 chamber and some with hundreds on them.

Good Luck and don't hesitate to ask questions. There are many of us who have already made the mistakes and can save you some headaches.

Roy, could you measure a 169.5 Wildcat for me if you have one, OAL and base to ogive? My plan is to run them as a single shot if I have to out of my short action, I can go to a COAL of 2.90 and cycle through the mag OK.

What I would like to do is find a Savage 116 in a 300RUM and use the action with CDI bottom metal and tuck that all into a Russo stock, that would be as good as it gets for shooting a stretched out WSM!

Your DIY bullets are intriguing, I have a small lathe that I could set up for doing something similar if I have to.

I saw you class on another site and wished I could take that much time of work to go, I would like to get to something like that as it would shave light years of my learning curve but I have to get a plan together to be able to do that.

In my mind the high pressure flush system would be the way to get set up, I have saved pics from what you have posted on other sites as well as what Chad Dixon has posted to try to build a system.

I do it old school for the moment and use dark oil cutting fluid and the pull clean reamer and flood with a oil can . I am working on putting together a flushing system on my chambering lathe. I hoping to cut down on the chambering time (i would rather be shooting then chambering).

Wow sounds exciting,i would love to be able to do my own chamber, downunder we have a huge shortage of smiths and armourers our last gunsmithing course was in 1982,we need some of our American cousins to come to Australia,it's a licence to print money down here,anyway's good luck with it all hope it goes great for you.

Actually, I almost ended up in Australia for my real job as a John Deere Tech working on combines. My wife spent a couple years working there and wants to go back and if she know of this she would be packing bags. We have several Aussie friends and know a few people there though I have never been there.
