I just picked up a remington 700 long action off a 30-06 and am wanting to have a longrange gun built what caliber do you suggest I was thinking 6.5-284 but am open to suggestions for sure.

Look in the Gunsmithing forum under Bolt face diameters (The second Sticky from the top)

There are around 15 cartriges that will work with little or no work to chose from and you
can make these into AI's for even more choices.

With out changing the bolt face I would probably vote for the 280 AI.

Setting the barrel up for the heavier bullets; I'd look at the 6.5x55 or 7.5x55 both can also be Ackley Improved. On the other end for deer, I'd look at a .240 Wby Mag also set up for heavy bullets in the rifle twist as a LR deer whacker. It sounds like you want to make a fun gun..

If your trying to touch an elk at 800-1000 yrds plus an Edge would be good but what about a 300 WSM or , I hate to say it but 7 WSM. You would have the action length to seat the better long range bullets out of the case and the recoil would be fine for targets without a brake.
