Difference between the 6-284 and the 6.5-284

Depends on what you are going to do with them. Hunting you want the 6.5 for knock down power. The 6 for target because it is moving so fast there is no need to waste the heavier bullet, but you would want to use the 115grn bullet for its high BC. If that is a factor you want to consider in your decision then go with the 6.5 because it will offer higher BC bullets.

I just want to know which is better for long range and why?

For Big game you will need the 6.5-284 for the heavier bullet, for varmints it is very hard to beat the 6-284. It is difficult to find another round that will outperform it unless you go really big.

Not throwin ya out but I disagree with this. It depends what yardage he is talkin about here. I have a 6-284 and wouldn't hesitate to use it on deer/bear to a certain distance.

I had to grin when I read thru the various posts. We all live in different parts of the country so I agree with EVERYBODY:D. When I grew up in Northern Michigan,'' long range'' was 200 yds because almost everybody hunted with a 30-30. and I would agree that a 6mm was and is a great deer rifle. I've lived in the west now for 35 years and long range might be 1000 yds or more in which case, neither would qualify!....Rich

It would be used to hunt coyotes and smaller at ranges of up close and personal to way out between 600-1000 yards.
for hunting it would be mainly 600 and closer and for target it would be mainly 300-1000

I'm still not sure what you are hunting but even for deer, the 6.5 would be better at 600 yds.

Since we are on this subject which do any of you feel is the better choice between 6-284 and 6-06 then 6.5-284 and 6.5-06????

I have a 6.5 lilja barrel that isn't sure if it wants to be a 6.5-284 or 6.5-06. Since they are nearly identical is there really any difference between the two?

Hi B-23...I live right next door to you and if you are interested, I have something that will top any that you have mentioned that will match to your Lilja barrel. If you are interested, PM me.....Rich

6 in one half dozen in the other. It's all about shooter preference. I am a die hard 6.5-06AI guy but my longest kill on a big critter is with a 6-284. I killed a 350 bull with a 6-284 at 902 yards and the 105 VLD worked perfectly. I was with my gunsmith when he shot a 320 bull at 1115 yards with a 6-284 and watched my brother in law boomsmack a 373 bull at 735 yards. Dead is dead, a nice poke through the lungs and it doesn't matter if you are shooting a 6-284 or a 6.5-284 they both kill the same.

I have a good friend who is a 6mm-284 junky. I actually got to witness 1 kill last fall in co. But up to now he has 22 bull elk under his belt with a 6x284. Last fall was 650 yards nice 6x7 he fired 3 shots hitting twice in the guts. He is an excellant shooter but has done very well with it. He shoots a 100 grain nosler soild base for elk which you can not get any more, he has a gun shop and was able to get several thousand . As far as deer his pet load is a 85 gr. siera hpbt. Also his theory is high vel. causing bullet fragmintation is why it kills so well. He thinks going to the heavy weights does not kill as well because the bullet punchs through. Its kind of hard to argue with someone that has that many elk under theree belt.

I already have a 6-284 and I will most likely go with the 6.5-284 if nothing else because it's so easy. No necking down no case forming just open the Lapua box and load away. :)

Read an article by Robert Whitley and he was getting 3100fps with a 140 Berger and RL17 is his 6.5-284 in a 31in tube.

If I could get a solid 3000fps in a 28in tube I would be a happy camper.

I am sitting here grinning 'cause I am looking at one of those cases that Rich is talking about... in fact, one that he made :)

It is a nice looking case and will put a little zip into a 6.5 or 6mm bullet.
