Steel targets for LR What size?

Hello,

I am planning on turning a nice 1000yd canyon into a range with circular steel targets. I've pretty much worked out the type of steel, thickness, etc.

The whole point is to extend my max hunting range.

My question is what size should I use? I don't want these to be easy to hit, as I'm trying to get better. I've been shooting rocks in this canyon and it seems to me that 1MOA to about 600, and 1.5MOA to 1000 would be challenging, but not impossible.

It's hard to tell how big rocks are looking at them from that far away though.

Anyone have any thoughts?

ETA: I forgot to mention, most of my hunting is for coyotes, with a 7mm. In my experience, anywhere in the front half drops them pretty good. Also interested in Elk. These might factor into size.

I have no experience with this kind of thing. You're pretty lucky to have an area to shoot like that. I'm going to give my opinion, and let the experts tear me up if need be. You said that you wanted to extend your hunting range, so I would go with a size close to a deer's vitals (10").

You didn't say how your are going to be shooting, bench, prone, etc. In 1000 yds benchrest we sight in in 4.5" clays on a sand bank. For field shooting, I would think 1 MOA max would be good.

Ah, sorry, just prone shooting off bipod with a backpack as a rear bag.

Maybe try the shooting sticks if I'm feelin' froggy. (I suck with those)

Did they come with loops for hanging a chain?

130 is steep, I ink I can get this done cheap or free, but it won't be A500. Don't really think it needs to be at that range.

$130 shipped, seemed reasonable to me. Not saying you couldn't do it cheaper.

You will be suprised what a normal bullet will do to mild steel at 1000yards from a 7mm. I would go AR500 for sure the target will last along time!

I have two targets made from AR500 one has cracked and another has a hole in it they have been shot a bit.

Nothing is as frustrating as not being able to tell WHERE you missed. And if you're shooting 1000 yards, you will miss, a lot. Unless you have a backstop that allows you to see your impact points clearly, but the biggest steel you can afford. I have 4" 8" 12" and 16", but I also have a 2 foot by 3 foot steel.

If you're going to buy ONE steel, get the biggest you can afford. Also, mild steel will get beat up, and even when you paint it, it's VERY hard to see hits at 1000 yards, you end up driving back and forth. Get AR550, past 500 yards you can't scratch it with a 300RUM. When you paint it, it looks new and you can see hits at 1000 yards.

If I had ONE steel to buy, it would be the BIG STEEL. You just draw a small circle to shoot at. That said, an AR550 2X3 costs some bucks.

Shooting Steel is a LOT MORE FUN.

The appealing thing about just regular-*** cold-rolled steel is that it is $9.00 for a 1/2x12x18 sheet.

I can't even find prices on the web for AR500 other than from gun-related sites.

That's a good way to get penetrated.

I would use nothing but AR500 it costs more but will last alot longer and
you could use 3/8 thick plate vice the 3/4 to 1in plate in carbon steel it lighter to pack around as well. I would use 2ft plates at 1000.

My 1000 yard target is 16". If I can hit it I can hit a deer. I concentrate on 1 shot at a time, dope every 1 seperately. Recently I shot a 15 shot 10"x5" group on that 16" plate @ 1,014.
At 1,500 my target is 24"x24".
At 1 mile I have a 24" target painted on a 7'x7' rock I use for wind corrections before I shoot at my steel. Then I have a 24"x24" square gong and a 36"x36" square gong, side by side. If it's really windy I sight the rock till I get dialed in on the painted target, then I shoot the 36" for 20 shots and try to keep my percentage as high as possible. If it's fairly calm, I'll do the same but on the 24" gong. Closer than 1,000 yds., 10" or less.

I'm moving to Bend in the winter, how far are you from there.
