These are great inclusions into a rangefinder that can read this far.

No need for a Kestral or ACI anymore. Just get a buy wind meter and use the Leica for the other dope.

Saves on the number of gadgets that we will need to cart about.

Will also save a lot of money for the new entrant into long range field shooting.

Now I wonder how far it will read?

I wonder what is meant by 'declination' here. Declination, as I'm guessing most of us use it, (same thing as 'variation' in mariner jargon if you are navigating on water) is the angle difference between true north and magnetic north when using a compass. But here I get the impression they are using it to describe downward angle and 'elevation' as up angle.

Or, or they mean 'compass bearing' that would be used in dealing with coriolis effect? This really starts to beg the question of how sophisticated is the ballistic software? Will it deal with coriolis (have my doubts on that one), G7, spin drift? It must allow user inputs regarding the ballistic properties of your bullet and load, wouldn't it?

I hope that if Leica is getting into ballistic programs with this unit, that they don't 'half-a_ _' it, but use a powerful program. When you are shooting distances like this thing might be able to read to, inputs like G7 capability, coriolis and spindrift become more important.

I also hope that they use a similar beam shape as the other Leica's but tighten up it's divergence. I think if many of us designed these things, that's what we would want to do.

It'll be very interesting to see how this unit stacks up against others currently in the field and some others that have recently been mentioned on lrh.com that should be coming on the market in the not too distant future.

I really doubt there will be any sophisticated ballistic software program included for that suggested retail price. If it provides accurate temperatures and station pressures, it may be possible to leave the Kestrel back at the house. I'm looking forward to learning more.

Thanks phorwath. Googled 'declination' and got some astronomy mumbo jumbo--probably should've used the old fashioned dictionary before I posted as well. Unfortunately, my guess is you are also correct on the second point...
 
Maybe I missed it, but I don't remember seeing anything about if you could put it on a tripod like you can the swaro??? I have the Leica CRF1200 and kinda wished I would have bought the swaro instead. I can't hold that Leica steady enough for long distance stuff. Lately my Leica has not been able to give good readings beyond 500 yards.

Send it to leica repair headquarter. They should easily range over 1000 yards with quick returns. Seen a BRF quit ranging over 200 yard, repaired it and was like new.

Have you changed the battery? Whenever my CRF1200 starts to give less than normal performance, a battery change has always resolved the issue.

Yes, change the battery first. LOL The one I've seen that failed (BRF) went through dozens of batteries, heavy use for years and some abuse before the rangefinder quit. Don't blame leica, they really do make excellent products and has excellent customer service.

Can't wait for the CRF 1600 to come out!!!

You simply choose the appropriate ballistic curve and the Rangemaster CRF 1600 shows you the precise terminal point."

What does that mean? It has different ballistic curves programed in and you need to pick the one that most closely matches yours? Someone needs to buy one and let us know just how good they work.
 
I did go out and buy a 3 pack of batteries for my Leica, spending little buggers. I think I finally come up with an idea for use my Leica on a tripod. Will post pictures when I am done with it.

I'd guess that doesn't sound too promising in terms of having a true ballistic computer on board such as Exbal. Still sound like a potentially good unit.
 
The big question to me, how far it will range. My Swaro is great! If the Leica call range the same distance, it will be a great new tool for LRH.
