Just would like to know what anyone's best 1,000+ yard, windy day, multiple shot groups are. I just shot the best I've actually measured in a while.
338 Edge, 300 gr. Lapua 2,885 fps.
Gusting and swirling wind, from 4- 12 mph. updrafts, downdrafts, the whole shebang.
1,014 yds. 15 shots, 10" horizontal x 5" verticle on 16" steele plate. 5- 3 shot strings.

My best long range group was during an f-class match in an absolute torrent of a rain storm. Shot an X at 800 yards and then for the next two shots, had the range master call out to me "you hit the spotter" for the next two shots. The white spotter dot on the target was 2" in diameter.

Did that with a 308 shooting 175g VLDs.

This was a good day with wind
30 shots 2 classes 2 10 shot groups for HG 1000 yard BR score on both groups 99 out of 100 group both around 8" Light gun 5 shot groups 1000 yard BR score on first target 50 out of 50 group was 3.??" target 2 was not good 47 score 8.?? group.

That is some great shooting there! All kill zone shots. Nice going.

Very nice shooting, 1 moa for 15 shots is pretty good in any condition from field shooting positions.

That said, you ask about windy conditions, that is a relative thing. I was up shooting this weekend. At my shooting position, the wind speed was from 8-12 mph and from 3:00 to 5:00 direction. At the target location, wind was 18-20 mph from a 5:00 direction but also with about a 40 degree updraft.

If you can imagine, this was not an overly windy day here in Montana, in fact it was pretty nice shooting compared to what can be normal here in north central Montana on the east front of the Rockies.

4-12 mph winds would be a relatively CALM day around here!!! LOL

Good Shooting!!

Fiftydriver,
Do you shoot in canyons or mostly flatter ground like rolling hills?
Where I shoot it's all steap sided canyons that were torched in a forest fire. 35,000 acres. Very little trees, and draws and fingers everywhere, all open or covered with brush. I'll find a photo and put it on here.gun)

Where we shoot its wide open, not a tree around but has alot of draws and coulees and steep side hills. Generally, if the wind is blowing over 10 mph, we have at least three wind directional changes over 1000 yards. FUN to estimate, in fact, generally you just have to shoot and see in some conditions.

Many will say they can call wind direction and conditions cold all the time, I for one can not and I know for a fact that most can not. I have shot and hunted with Shawn Carlock and I will say he is about as gifted at reading conditions as anyone I have met. For me, I shoot REALLY high BC bullets at high velocity to cover my rear as much as possible with condition errors!!! And shoot alot in the wind, very good practice. If I am not accuracy testing, it really can not be to windy to go shoot, always learn more shooting in the wind then when its calm in my opinion.

I went out today to shoot steel at 1,472 yards. 24"x24"x3/8".
5mph steady wind with gusts to 15mph. Took a few sighters on a rock @1,455. Next 3 shots went 4.5"... Next 3 shots went 1 off target and 2 @ 3" center to center, low right.
Then the wind really picked up and I was missing every shot 6"-8" to the right no matter what I corrected for. Tried waiting it out but no luck. Just kept blowing harder and more eradic. I will save my bullets for a calmer day.
338 Edge, 300 gr. Lapua.
I have some Lehigh 245 gr. solids coming. They will knock 30" of wind off the lapua's. Should help. Hope so.[/IMG]
