I have a mark 5 accurized 300 Wby Mag rifle with a Huskemaw scope. It is not easy to develop a reload for a 180 grain bullet that is faster that the Norma factory ammo. Does anyone have a good fast reload for this gun with a 180 gr bullet. Powder type, grains, primer, velocity achieved etc.

Also anyone used the Berger bullet 185 gr in this rifle? Again powder, velocity data appreciated.

Interested in velocity achieved and any details on long range capability.

Les, you're on the right track when talking berger VLD for long range. I have a Rem 700 in 300wby with a 27" lilja on it. Initially I worked up a great load with 180 Barnes TSX bullets, they were very accurate and fast. The load was Rem brass, Fed215GM primers, 80.5grns RL22, bullets seated to a COAL of 3.510. This produced around .5 moa running at 3300fps. I discovered as I began to shoot farther and farther out to 1000m that the hard monolithic bullet was NOT what I wanted to use on game at those distances, to 650m or 700m yes. I went to the 210 berger VLD and will probably never use anything other than bergers after seeing all of the one shot kills this last season. The 210 is a little heavy I think for the wby, but the 185vld or 190vld is a great choice. My wby will be a RUM in a few weeks, significantly more speed with the 210's. Hope this helps

Thanks Tumbleweed did you do anything special with Bullet depth! The very tapered profile of the Berger must leave a lot of space from rifling just to get it into the magazine! Any idea where to get ballistics on the HSM reloaded with berger for the 300 185 gr in the store offering. I could not find it.

I have five 300 wby bbls for my 1K comp gun plus my hunting 300 wby. I shoot Berger 210 VLD's in all of them. I ended up with RL 25 in all of them. All acheve at least 3000 fps with naked bullets in tubes with short throats (no bullet jump...all tubes have bullet jamed into lands). Now, not all of my comp loads are that hot, but one comp load is over 3100 fps!!! I think that the 300 wby case is almost perfect for that sized bullet with a 1-10 0r 1-11 twist tube. There are bigger dogs in the 30 class. They have their place and can be pushed hard, but at great expence.

Again, my personal opinion...take it for what it is worth.

Good luck.

Hey Les, I initially worked up a good load with the 185vld's myself before going to the 210vld in my wby. The load I had with the 185vld was rem brass, Fed 215GM mag primers, 78.0grns RL22 and a COAL of 3.728 touching the rifling, this gave me 3043fps average. Accuracy was around .5moa. I decided to play with the 210's and discovered that I could push them nearly as fast as the 185vld's in my particular rifle. The 210vld load was rem brass, 215GM mag primers, 77.0grns RL22 and a COAL of 3.730 touching the rifling. Velocity was 3,000fps. These bullets have a long bearing surface and are "sticky", I think that's why I could run the 210 almost as fast. With the much better B/C of the 210, it was a no brainer ballistically to go with the 210. You may not get the same results in your rifle however. I was not concerned about fitting the shells in the mag, I could have one in the chamber and one would fit down, with these bullets that's all it should take. Not sure where to get ballistics for the HSM stuff. These are one shot one kill bullets if you put them where they're supposed to go.
