G'day,

Looking for a min & max charge weight using Allients new Reloader 17 with a Barnes Tipped TSX 168gr in the 300 WSM

Thanx in advance

KAV300WSM

I use RL 17 for 2 completly different rifles and shoot a lot of 168 it seems ive tried them all one gun likes 67.5 gr. (max) the other maxed out at 63

I have shot 64Grains of reloader 17 with a 165G tsx velocity was around 3000 and no pressure signs. Accuracy was about 1 1/2 at 100

The alliant website lists 68 as the max for RL-17 with a 165 gr Speer.

Right now I am getting 3180 out of my 300WSM with 168 gr tsx over charge of 67.3gr. I suspect I maybe able to get a bit more out if it. I stopped there not because of pressure but it was shooting very accurately and I was out of time. I was happy because that is pretty **** fast for a 168gr bullet out of a 300WSM

What barrel do you have? Length and twist.....Rich

The Alliant website give 68 grains as the max load of RL-17 with a 165 BTSP Speer bullet. When I started loading my two 300WSM rifles with RL-17 I started at 62 grains and worked up using two different bullets. With the 22 inch barreled Ruger 77 MarkII I stopped at 64.7 grains under a 168 TTSX bullet. I stopped not because of pressure but because I got very good accuracy and 3000 ft/sec velocity.
With the 24 inch barreled Winchester 70 I worked up to 68 grains using a 168 grain Berger VLD bullet. I was able to get over 3100 ft/sec.. Again I stopped not because of pressure but because I got better accuracy at 67.5 grains. In both case I was using Winchester brass and Fed 215 Primers.

Love Re#17 but not in my 270 WSM 65.5 grs pushed a 140 gr Berger 3365 Sunday. But it was also a 3" group. So far best powder for short mags is Mag Pro. 74grs pushes 140 gr Berger 3250 and less then MOA accuracy.

What length barrel do you have? I have a similar size case in my 6.5 Sherman and RL25 gives top velocity and good accuracy along with retumbo although retumbo may be a little slow for the 140's in your WSM........Rich

Northern Idaho That must be really cool living up there. Its a 24" stock Mod 70 Classic. 74grs of Magpro is absolute max. I've got a little bit of Retumbo and H1000 and Re#22. What are these cartridges you have ?

I had the same experience with R17 in the 270 WSM but I had pressure signs before getting over 3200fps with 140 Bergers and horrible accuracy but with 110 TTSX I get 3670 with real good accuracy easy. Magpro rocks but I haven't been able to get as low deviation as Retumbo, single digits 3300+fps.
I have stoked R17 in a couple different 30cals and 25 cal and is seems to choke if your a little over bore with heavier bullets.

Ya, north Idaho is great! I have a 300 Sherman which is my own design based on a .270 case. It holds about 75.5 grs. of H20, which is about like your case.......Rich
