Wheeler action wrench and barrel nut wrench. Less than $100.00 and you can be a barrel swapping fool Add a go gauge, a little cellophane tape(use a couple of strips on the base of the go gauge to check that the action will not close) and you can set headspace without fear! You could also add a no-go gauge, but really not needed. If you want to use a fired casing you can also use that for headspacing as no two headspace gauges are ever the same anyway, in my experience. Really not that hard to do and rewarding to do your own work too.

Don't you just screw it down until the barrel stops on the go gauge and lock the nut? The video on the Savage sight seemed to make it look that way. So tape on the back of the go gauge makes enough of a difference to not close. Who would a thunk it?

Well you can do that, but I prefer to double check it after the nut is tightened because depending upon how much you tighten the nut, the action lock up on the go/no go will change slightly. I am anal about this kind of crap though

well it seems so far there are three pages of people telling you to get the Savage and one person saying get the Remington. I will also jump on the Savage wagon. I have one in 22-250 and it is a absolute shooter.

I do agree but there is still alot of Rem fans out there. Me being one of them. I own several.

Back to the Rem 700 sps varmint. I've read several reviews on it and it get good reviews. Most do say that the stock is not the best however the price of the 700 sps is not that bad and you have room for a better stock.

Besides I'm getting tired of bouncing back and forth on what gun to buy.

You guys have fun with that. But the truth is that there are no barrel nuts on top grade actions. Im not saying that for the money savage has a bad product, im saying that if i was going to buy a new gun i would just save alittle more money and buy the remington. If you look some of the custom builders are starting to put a remington style recoil lugs on and sholdering the barrel like the remmy 700. im not wanting to start any thing heated, just dont thing tha barrel nut is a great thing just because it is fun to change a barrel. Go to a gun show and look at how high guns are , but i will bet you can get a savage for $120 - 180 bucks. a dodge truck has a better resale value. just my two cents take it and a $100.00 bill and buy a savage anywhere.

I won't argue the cost of a custom action at all. I will argue that Savage owners can get as good if not better results with their own "work" for a great deal less is all that I am saying. Sure many don't like the look of a barrel nut(mainly gunsmiths), but there is no arguing the results that Savage achieves these days. The time they are a changing. Best wishes.

You don't need the barrel nut. I have seen and shoot a Savage Target action barreled in 338 Lapua that is turned on without the nut. Looks like any other run of the mill barrel action set up. I guess you could call a Savage unique, because it uses a system that other companies don't use. Though if you look at the new Marlins or Mossberg (I forget which) are utilizing the barrel nut. I have also talked to some one that owns a Remmy and is going to have it set up with a barrel nut so that he can change calibers like Savage guys. I guess the saying, "To each his own," comes into play.
