Barnes triple shock

Guys

Has anyone used the Barnes "Triple Shock" X bullets past about 300 yards? I was thinking of trying these bullets, but wondered what the rings cut into the body of the bullet might do to the aerodynamics?

Would be interested in your comments.

I'm shooting the 168 gr Barnes X_Triple shock BTHP out of my .308. 100 yard groups with 45 grains of VarGet are producing groups in the low to mid .3's. 200 yards groups are just under .75 inches with heavy winds.

Next week I'll be testing them out to 500 yards and I'll keep everyone posted on how there shooting.

The ultimate test of the bullets and rings will come in a couple weeks when I use them on an Alaskan moose hunt.

I have shot my .257 stw @ 500 yards with 100 grain tsx. I get 2" groups and it drops 14.5" at this distance.

i made a shot last deer season at a deer AT 300 yards and it resulted in a nice one shot kill as usual.. i shoot a remington 700 in 308win. cal. i use the 165 gr. Barnes TSX.. i also have used the same bullet and gun for a 176 yard one shot kill and one at 50 yards and had the one shot kill too.. i"ve used the barnes for the last 4 years and 3 out of 4 kills ain't to shabby..the year i did'nt shoot a bullet was the year i saw no deer to shoot..at this rate a box of 50 will last for quite some time

The purpose of my using the TSX/TTSX bullets is for a few reasons. 1) simply to test them in various calibers and see what happens. So far, flawless performance. 2) I wanted somthing tough to hit some shoulders to see if these bullets seem to "hit hard" and break down a deer or bear. So far, flawless performance here too. 3) I wanted to see if they really penetrated as far as advertised. So far, expectations exceeded as I've never recovered one.

All that said, I have never intended to use these tough bullets for LRH. My self imposed distance with Barnes is 400 yards and under. And that is with the intent to hit bone. The further out they are, the higher the risk of pencilling through if only lung is hit, IMO. I load my Barnes bullets hot...as hot as possible for shear energy and speed, with accuracy that is "acceptable" but not always impressive. So long as I'm grouping inside of 5-6" at 400 I'm happy.

Beyond 350/400 yards, I'm going for a softer bullet like a Btip, AB, Scirocco, Berger, or perhaps an Amax. With good reason, many will want the highest BC bullet possible. I do not disagree with that. But, I also know that all it takes is knowing what your bullet's trajectory is at the distances you wish to shoot.

If I can get a smoking load easily with a 180 Btip from a 300 RUM and I cannot get any Berger to shoot worth a crap, guess what I'm loading? I'll not hesitate to push a Btip from that rifle and take a deer at 800 yards with it.

I've taken cow elk with the 168 TSX out of a 300WBY out to just shy of 500yrds and that was enough for me, both first shots turned on shoulder bones one didn't look bad so I sent another one and it hitter her farther back and killed her second one dropped her in her tracks HARD and looked like the classic rug pull with a shoulder shot but when I went out to get her she lifted her head. I found that that bullet hit just below the shoulder blade socket and turned forward and came out her shoulder but since she was looking at me it re-entered her neck and cut the major artery which kept her down till I got there. That was the last time I used either the 300 WBY or a TSX. I do use the TTSX for coyotes but that's about it!

I have shot the 180 TSX bullet in my 300 RUM and Win mag out to 1100 meters and they are very accurate. The longest distance that I have taken game with them has been 777 yards which was a 1 shot DRT kill using my 300 Win mag

Last year on the antelope hunt I shot one at a little over 400yds with a 257 Weatherby 80gr TTSX. Hit high shoulder, dropped in tracks.
My son shot one at 550yds with his varmint/antelope/deer/elk/moose gun, a 30/378 Weatherby 180gr TTSX. Lung shot dropped in tracks, (yes, 180gr is enough for antelope).
Accuracy at longer ranges seems to be no better or worse than most other bullets.
Bullet performance in 25 cal, 7MM, and 30 cal. on mainly deer out to 450 has been flawless.
