inpu ton long range hunting bullets anyone?

well im looking for a bullet for a 7mm rem mag. in all my rifles from the .243 to the .300 win mag i load the remington core-lokt. but this time i want to try something different. yeah i love the core-lokts, they work great on game. but i think that maybe the slightly lower BC and shape of the bullet may some what play against it in long range performance, at say 700yds+. i've never shot anything with them out past 350yds so im not sure how they'll do way out there.

so anyone thats tried other bullets at ranges on game please share result or insight. im leaning towards the hornady SST 162gr. wish they made one a lil heavier but according to their site and what i see in the stores 162 is as high as they go.

most likely the same thing is gonna happen last time i tried other bullets and im gonna end up goin back to the trusty old core-lokt.

never could get the results i wanted. such as penetration, bullet expantion some loads that just fragment good for small game not for big game. im sure some times it could have just been a coinsidence that the bullet reacted the way it did. who knows. i just know i out of what i tried i didnt get the killing results like the core-lokts. never did get to try anything at range tho.
i liked the remington accu-tip but tips kept breaking off in the magazine. that was the problem more than anything. lead nosed bullets got smashed the plastic tips like the accu tip would break about 1 sometimes 2 in a magazine. and my luck the busted tip would be the one i'd fire at range on a animal.

I like the GS Custom bullets. You will need to be willing to try unconventional. I can say from personal experience that they work very well.

What about the berger VLD 168s? I like what I've read about the but I've heard they fail a lot inside 200 yards, which really doesn't make sense to me.
I just want a bullet that will punch thru.

Your mind set on what a bullet should do mirrors mine. I did a lot of research and chose to try the GS bullets. I have used them off and on for the last 3yrs or so. I have not been disappointed at all. I also tried the Nosler E-tip, and was happy with it as well. I found the difficulties and expense of getting the GS bullets was out weighed by the performance. The bc's are not the greatest, but the added velocity will overcome in most situations. Depends on which bullet and how far you want to shoot. For most, out to 600 to 800yrds, they will run great. Past 1000yrds there may be other bullets that will do better getting there. On game performance will be tough to beat. Meat damage is nill, and efficient kills are very good.

This is all my opinion, based on my experience. We have had some great debates on this subject. If there was one magic bullet, there would not be very many to choose from.

yeah im also trying to be cost effective. with the amount i shoot paying $30 and $40 for 50 bullets would break the bank.

I've never used the GS bullets before, but hoping to give them a whirl in my 300 Ultra. They sound like an excellent bullet but very spendy. Not something you would want to use on PD's and rocks very often unless you dont' mind spending an extra $1 - $1.50 per pop.

The best .284 GS bullet for LR consideration is the 140 HV rated at about .48 BC. You could probably easily get 3400 fps out of a 7RM (possibly 3500) which would get you to a little past 1000 yds @ 1000' elevation, with 1600 fps which is the minumum expanding velocity for most of the GS HV's.

My next choices would be the 150 E-Tips or 160 ABs.

In my 7mm mag I use the 160 accubond inside 300 yds and the 168 berger or 162 a-max past 300 yds.
I hunt with the 160 ab in the magazine and have always had time to switch to the berger/a-max for the longer shots.
I am lucky the 160 ab and the 168 berger shoot to the same poi at 100yds. The 160 ab shoots 1" higher at 100 yds compared to the 162 a-max. I have had excellent results with all three projectiles.

1st- berger 168 gr with imr7828. Good bc.
2nd-hornady a-Max. Will expand great.
These work great in my 7mm mag. I know that money may be an issue, but long range shooting is an art to me. gun)

yeah i've looked at the a-max but i've read they arent good for large game like deer, hog, elk etc.
but in the same rite i've heard they have been used with good success on large game.

any bullet with a BC close to .5 or better and holds together pretty good is suspect for testing.

GO A-MAX if you have a 300wm use a 208gn A-max and they will fall.the A-max is more than just a papper bullet.even in a 308w the A-max will put a deer down.and the bc is as good as the vld bullets.GO A-MAX
