Any one have any experince with a 30 inch 264 win mag rifle for
long range hunting or target shooting.
What kind of FPS did you get on the 85, 100 & 120 grain bullets?
What powders are getting the best accuracy?
 
Not in a 30" pipe, but a 26" is very nice. The 264 needs slow powder to work well. I used H870 with 140gr bullets to get over that 3200 FPS range. Faster powders would only yield #'s just over 3100 FPS. If you plan to shoot lighter bullets you can probably get away with shooting faster powders just fine.
I opened my 264 up to a 6.5-300 Win Mag. I am pushing the 3300 FPS mark with a 140gr now in a 24" tube.

264 WM can be a love/hate relationship, but once you find the sweet spot, you'll love it!
 
I have an older Remington bdl 264 with 24 inch barrel and a newer one in 26 inch stainless that is my favorite deer rifle with only 100 bullets is all I ever use
it has been deadly and very accurate dropped them in their tracks every time.
with the 85 grain pills and 30 inch barrel I should be able to get very close to 3900 FPS. I have been using 68 grains of RL 22 for the 26 inch one and getting 3860 fps with 100 ballistic tips. I just bought the 30" McGowan stainless barrel and don't have it put together yet.
 
Excuse my ignorance, but the 300WM case is larger in capacity than the 264WM?

My first 1000-yard bullseye target rifle was chambered for the .264 Win. Mag in the mid 1960's. Three Douglas barrels were air gaged and the one with the most uniform groove dimensions was selected. It was chamberd with a standard SAAMI reamer and finished 28 inches long.

Norma was the only outfit making known-good 6.5mm match bullets. I was given 8 boxes of their 139-gr. FMJ nickel plated boattail bullets. Tried IMR4831, IMR4350 and H870 powders with Win. 120 primers. Fired one 15-shot group with each powder at Sierra's max load recommendation. H870 produced the only 1 MOA group and the others were near 2 MOA; all three at 1000 yards. Estimated muzzle velocity was 3250 by Sierra's head ballistic tech. He also said I'd be lucky if that barrel went 600 rounds of accurate life.

Won some matches with that load and it was somewhat mild in recoil, but with a 13-pound rifle that's normal.

Sierra Bullets gave me 2 boxes of their prototype 140-gr. .264 HPMK bullets to test, so I shot three 15-shot test groups with them. Smallest one was about 25 inches at 1000 yards. Gave the rest back to Sierra mentioning they didn't shoot very well. Sierra said they couldn't get 'em to shoot well either. (It was near 20 years later before Sierra made really good 6.5mm match bullets.)

That barrel died instantly at about 650 rounds; went from shooting 1/2 MOA at 600 yards to 4 MOA in two shots.
 
Why the crimp on the 264?
the 300 shouid have had the AI shoulder to make a little longer neck.
what bullets are these and weight.

It was a factory Win PP round that I seated a 140gr Accubond into, thus the crimp :)

I already have one wildcat I need to fire form for so I didn't want another. A 6.5mm-300 Win Mag is a very simple wildcat. Neck to 6.5mm & go. It will run 3300 FPS with a 140gr which is lots fast enough for me ;)
 
I had a match reamer built in 264 Win Mag and have built 3 rifles on Savage actions. I started with a 260 Rem, then 264. then 6.5 STW. I liked the 264 the best. I was shooting 140 grain bullets at 3400 fps out of a 30 inch tube. The best group I have ever shot was a 3 3/8 5 shot group at 1000 yards shooting 108 grain Lapuas at 3825 fps. I think the 264 Win is the best 6.5 caliber you can have. Yes the 6.5 STW will be faster, but I found the 264 to be the most accurate 6.5 caliber. If you don't like a lot of recoil, biuld a 260 on a good action with a 28 inch tube. You a match reamer and you can get 2940 fps and a very accurate caliber.

The only thing I ever heard about anything being "ideal" about any centerfire rifle case is if its powder charge weight in grains for a maximum load (one producing about 53K CUP or 61K PSI) has the same number as its bore's sectional area in square millimeters. Example, a 6.5 mm groove diameter has a cross sectional area of about 33 square millimeters so it's "bore capacity" is about 33 grains of powder. This bore capacity tends to produce the best accuracy for practically all cartridges believed to be very accurate. Examples: .22 PPC, 6 PPC, .308 Win. And barrel life for best accuracy from a 1/4th MOA tack driver is about 3000 rounds for each one. Double the amount of powder over their bore capacity and barrel life is 75% less. But accuracy doesn't degrade near that much; typically about 25%. Please enlighten me.

Okie2 also states: "The best group I have ever shot was a 3 3/8 5 shot group at 1000 yards..." What's the largest group it's ever shot? I ask because folks rarely, if ever, shoot another group equalling their smallest one with any rifle-ammo combination; including benchresters. I always state my rifle-ammo group claims as the largest they've shot. That's all I (or anyone else, for that matter) can count on all the time. If one shoots 20 groups and talks only about the smallest one, in reality, he's only telling folks what's happened 5% of the time. I don't even remember what the smallest groups I've shot are. They represent the "luckiest" end of the group size spectrum. And a 5 shot group's probability of being what the rifle-ammo will shoot with a 100 shot group is about 50%

What was the test barrel length for this load? Are these accuracy loads? Can H-870 be used in this caliber also? What type of barrel life should I expect with these slow burning powders and a 140grn Berger VLD? How temp sensitive are these slow powders? Has anybody ever tried 50BMG? What primer should I use? Sorry for all the questions. I ran the numbers and I am really excited about what I am seeing with this caliber.
