Im pretty new to this forum and new to really long range hunting (600+yds.) Iv taken elk and deer at 350-600yards with holdover B&C holdover reticle. I want to shoot further to 1,000 yards.

My rifle is a christensen arms hunter remington mod 700 in 300rum. I have a leupold 4.5x14x40AO mounted on it right now. I like the scope a lot but I dont know if its good enough quality to meet my expectations. My other option is a Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x44. I really like this scope also and the glass quality seems better but I dont think its that much better than the leupold. From what iv read NF is no doubt the best lr scope out there.

So my question is what do you guys think? Should I stay with the leupold and get some turrets for it, or go with the zeiss, or just save up and buy a nf?

As of right now the gun shoots about half moa with the cheap plastic remington stock on it which I plan to replace with an hs precision glass bedded or maybe something comparable in quality. The grey bull stocks seem pretty sweet. Anybody have any experience with them?

Im open to any suggestions on scopes, stocks, etc.... What do you guys think?

Well you asked for an opinion and I'm going to give it. Buy the turrets. The Leupy should be capable of anything you ask of it. This will be a lot cheaper and allow you to save up for the NF. Just make sure your Leupy is turret compatible.

As far as stocks are concerned, you just have to try them out if you get a chance.

Thanks for the advice. I think thats what I want to do for now. I talked to Kenton Industries and they said they make some. As far as giving him info on my guns ballistics. Would it work if I just shot the gun at every distance out to 1,000 yards for the drop info or am I better off just giving them my ballistic info weight, bc, velocity?

If you want ballistics specific turrets, then giving him the pertinent information should hook you up. Otherwise I would just have turrets made to match your click values (1/8, 1/4, 1/10, inch or MOA) and make your own range cards. As you change loads then you are not stuck with one ballistic value for a bullet you may not want to shoot anymore. I'm an avid reloader and like to change things up from time to time. Therefore a ballistics specific turret would not work for me. I guess you could make another set of turrets for what ever new bullet you want to use.

I'll second Tank. I just got a turret from Kenton for my Uncle's scope. I got it in 1/4 moa to match the scope. That way if there are changes in load or elevation we just change the drop chart. I just could not justify $100 per turret every time we change something about the load.

Stick with your Leupold scope. I've sent two scopes back to Leupold and had them install M1 turrets and TMR reticles. They do great work.

Also, you can't go wrong with an HS Precision stock.

I need to update this thread as the rifle now wears the same scope that you have (VXIII 4.5-14x40) but with the M1 turrets and TMR reticle.

Did kenton ind give you new scope caps or do you have to get them from leupold? I would rather go the kenton route because I wont have to take the scope off and send it leupold. Also as far as when I do have the cash for the Nightforce which one should I get? I was thinking the 3.5x15x50 and which reticle do you guys have/like?

The turrets on my scopes were installed by Leupold. It required that I send the scope to them. They turned the job around quickly - just a matter of two or three weeks.

Like you, I will upgrade to a nightforce...probably in '10. My choice will be NXS 5.5-22x50 with NP-R1 reticle.

I called Kenton Industries today and I talked to the tech support. He was pretty cool. I told him what I had and he was really helpful. I think im going to go with the laser etched turrets customized to my load. I like the fact that I wont have to count clicks and have charts and I can just dial and shoot. I have a really accurate load right now for it and I need to chrono it to make sure my spreads are okay. What is the max as far as spreads between shots. 15fps, 30.... to be accurate at 800-1000yards? Also it will have a zero stop feature which sounds handy. With my luck I would have my zero all screwed up without it :) I also looked into their windage turret and it looks pretty handy. Does anyone have any experience with em? Thanks for all the help!

I think that both of your scopes are of good quality. I had the same problem last year and looked at all options. The NF are GREAT scopes, but very expensive. The option that I found that was within my budget and provided the best results was a ATN 10x65Z Army Mil-dot. This scope is less expensive than the NF, but this scope is heavy, 5 lbs. This is a true long range scope. Couple this with the iSnipe ballsitic program that I have on my iPhone, this is a deadly combination. The ATN scope has built in BDC for five different calibers and is very accurate, but it is calculated for even yardages in 100 yard increments. I have a HS Precision stock on my 308 and I love it. This stock feels great in your hands. You can't go wrong with a McMilliam stock. Happy shootinggun)
