Have a friend that has a 26" #4 Lilja chambered in 338 RUM with a pretty long throat. He would like to move up to the 338 Edge. Any reason he can't just have the existing RUM barrel reamed to the Edge? Anyone done this or have knowledge of any pitfalls that might be encountered? Thanks in advance for your help.

The edge has a slight advantage in powder capacity and as long as you have an extended mag
you can take advantage of the increase in powder, but if you don't have an extended magazine
and have to seat the bullets deeper in the longer case there is little if any advantage from the300/338 RUM to the 338 RUM.

Rechambering is strait forward unless the original chamber is slightly over sized then the edge reamer may not clean the chamber up with out setting the shoulder back.(More expensive)
and in that case just buying an extended mag box will give him more powder capacity and less
free bore with the 338 RUM.

He is thinking about building a new heavier rifle in 338 edge and thought that it might be handy if this lighter rifle and it were both chambered the same. I don't know that he would gain anything other than the convenience of both having the same chamber.

I would not bother with it. Your friends 338 RUM with a 26" custom barrel will do the job . If an EDGE is in the works, you need to go with at least a 28" barrel to take advantage of the extra powder capacity, and to gain anything over what your friend already has. If I owned a 338 RUM, I would be shooting the 225gr AB, or 300gr SMK. Might ask for some feedback from those on here that shoot a 338 RUM.
However, if the barrel is due for replacement on the 338 RUM, and he wants to go to an EDGE, that is easy to do.
