It seems like there will be a supply of Wildcat bullets so I'm going to rebarrel my Savage model 12 270WSM to shoot the 169.5 Wildcats but I'm not sure really which barrel maker to purchase from or what twist and number of lands to use. I'm thinking a Palma contour, 28in long plus a brake similar to the DE brake. I have seen the twist from 8-10 working and different land configurations also but what would maximize this chambering with this bullet?gun)

Thanks for the reply, I have read Paul's posts with great interest on this but I was wondering about some more specifics like barrel manufacturer, # of lands, twist and barrel length. I saw you guys with Kirby's 270's are running 1-8 twist but Paul was looking good with 1-10 , I've seen bullet go sideways farther down range, that and I thought I read somewhere when you lower your muzzle velocity you need to spin faster to retain your stability, maybe I got something backwards. I've read so much lately that things are running together:rolleyes:
Any thought on the best barrel length would be appreciated!

Why not split the difference and go with a 1-9"? This would still give you the freedom of shooting 140 and 150 grain bullets if the supply of Wildcats dried up again.

BINGO, I found that Mcgowen does a Savage prefit in a .277 1-9 or 1-10 twist, I'm going to give em a call soon and see what I can get done after hunting season. I figure if I get it done before I toast this barrel I can develop a coyote load with some 110gr bullets then switch to the heavy bullets before big game season.
I think I'll go with a med Palma contour, 28in long, 1-9 twist with some kinda baffle style brake.gun)If I have the coin I'll order a 338 barrel with it and rock a 338 EDGE also, but I think that would be flying high enough to come up on the financial dept. radar , at least till she has a rifle set up.

I have a 7mm Dakota necked down to 270 27" rock barrel 1in 9 twist it shoots pretty good for me. I am just hoping the 169.5"s will be available soon I'm getting low on barrowed bullets, I have played with the berger 150's with a little more powder first shot with it @ 200 yards 1/8" off dead center of the 1" orange dot 2nd bottom center of the dot they seem to shoot as close as I would want to the 169's but I still want to do some tweaking. this is olny out of desperation I am hoping Paul has the 169's ready soon.
