Remington Custom Shop

Hello,


I need some feedback about the remington custom shop. I'm going to look for a new rifle with a sporter configuration but for lots of long range work.

I have selected two rifles in 7mm Remington Magnum :

first, McMillan new hunting rifle Legacy model there are 6 months of delay to get it but finish, Schneider barrel, action, stock are premium...

second choice, Remington 700 AWR II from their custom shop. I have no idea about finish and quality ? Secondly, I don't like B&C stock is it possible to ask a HS or McMillan ? do you have an idea of the delay ?

If someone can give me some info...

I have never seen one. I would call them. If your not dead set on a Rem there are lots of other great semi custom builders out there. HS precsion, ED Brown just to name a few.

Why don't you just have Eddie build it? He builds 7 Rem mags for the Secret Service and you will get exactly what you want and he will answer the phone when you have a question. He also builds his own rifles which are usually nationally ranked. He will let you order the parts or you can just tell him which parts you want and he will order them.

Buffalobob, thanks for the referral but, just to set things straight, I do not build 7 Mags. for the Secret Service. They have their own "In House" gunsmith, who builds all of their sniper and counter sniper rifles. A few years ago their shop was damaged in a fire and they used my shop until theirs was rebuilt. I would be glad to build a rifle for anyone who wishes to contact me. Eddie.

I looked at a new remington custom shop awr rifle at a local gun shop a few years ago. I was not impressed by the workmanship as the one side of the stock was against the barrel. Gave me the impression that quality control was very poor.

Why not have one of the smiths from this forum build one for one? You'll get top quality parts, service, craftsmanship and the rifle you want from any of the sponsor smiths on here.

Remington can say custom all they want but when a gunsmith builds the rifle it is his/her name on the line. Not to mention you will get better quality components for the same or less money I will bet. Go with a smith on the site you might wait awhile longer but you will have a better firearm IMO.

I own four Remington Custom Shop rifles. Three of them are AWR's and one is an AWR II. Speak with Keith there or leave a message and he will call you back. All of their work has been very very very good. I have a 375 H&H. The only one ever made with Safari sights. Its a way cool 6.75 LB 375 H&H AWR (my favorite gun ever). I have a second 375 H&H AWR with no sights (just a swarovski Z6 1-6 scope). I have a 280 Rem AWR II which I just think is wonderful and shoots like a dream. I have a 7mm AWR which I have have not shot yet. All are left handed. They really turn out a great and accurate product. They make a really cool gun and they're easy to work with. i don't like B&C stocks so I have had all of mine build with McMillan stocks. There is no problem doing that. You will have to remind them that they are a custom shop once and awhile. They make the AWR's with bottom metal and B&C socks. Let them know how you want it built and thats the way you will get it.

Now listen to this though. I also have a Remington BDL in 300RUM (actually two of them). I hate the way a BDL looks and I don't do bottom metal. All of my stuff has to be ADL style. Its just me. I am not saying anyone else has to do that and there are benefits of bottom metal but for me there are none. The custom shop has always made those adjustments for me. OK back to the BDL's. I got talking with Jim See at Center Shot Rifles. There are a lot of good smiths on this forum. I am not the one to talk to about that. I consider myself a newbe when it comes to smith knowledge and I don't pretend otherwise. Jim just clicked with me. He has a great reputation and is a true joy to speak with. About two weeks or so ago I sent him one of my BDL's. He is going to put a Brux 28" 300RUM interrupted fluted barrel on it with a Manners T2 stock. He is doing all of the other smith work to it and let me tell you it will in the end cost what a Remington AWR custom shop rifle would be. It might even come in just under what the custom shop will be and it will be much better. The difference is Jim will give you suggestions on what to do so you ultimately get a rifle that is suited to your needs. The Remington Custom shop is just taking an order. Jim is building a true rifle for your expectations and not just taking an order. He has been 100 times better to work with than the Remington Custom Shop. And please remember I have no complains about and of the Remington Custom Shops rifles I have received. I have shot over 400 rounds out of each of my 375's. I have shot 300+ out of the 280. The rifles have been great but the experience cannot hold a candle to the great experience I have had so far with Jim. I truely believe you will get a better gun for your needs out of Jim at Center Shot Rifles or one of the other smith's on this sight that other people hold in high regard.

I had a APR in 338 Win Mag from the custom shop.

1-Crown sucked
2-trigger sucked
3-bedding sucked, soft like a jelly bean mushed under the front of the action, I pulled it out with a screw driver.
4- Action canted in the stock.
5- Bolt handle hit the stock and didn't close all the way.
6- On the 3rd shot the extractor failed.

I never had all these problems with all my Remmys combined.

I've shot 700's for 25 years and It was the worst one I've owned. Just my experience with one. It left a bad taste, my sendero went to Africa and the APR stayed home.

Not to jump on the Remington Custom Shop bashing bandwagon, but I have heard or read of several that produced mediocre accuracy at best. I would think that for same or less money, one could have a rifle built by a good gunsmith such as one of the site sponsors here to his specifications with a match grade barrel, stock of choice and a match grade trigger and it would shoot lights out guaranteed. Definitely the way I would go. Just my .02

I agree with you and others. The guys on here are top notch and you can't go wrong with them.
