.338 225 Grain ELDX for Elk

The .338 may be a much better bullet (structurally speaking) than the 6.5 (granddaughter's rifle) that I tested. Some "swear by them" on game …..but, my gut tells me that I would "swear at them"!

I hunt mixed terrain…..I don't want bullet integrity determining what type of shots I can make! 20 yards to 800 is asking a lot of a cup and core…..even the bonded ones!

800 yards is nearing the limit for reliable expansion velocity (1900 fps) with my wife's .338 WM (her personal limit is 500) …..but, I'd almost write you a guarantee that it will not fail at 20 yards! 😉 memtb

I agree with all of those statements. I know this forum is "Long Range Hunting" but I always try to get as close as I can (within reason). I mean if can get within 200 yards of an animal I spot at 1000, I will sneak in closer every time. I do practice out to 800 yards regularly though. You just never know

Magical…..maybe not! Perhaps a bit more forgiving with angling/raking shots if they are taken! memtb
 
I guess my main concern when I first posted this was would the ELDX bullets have a tendency to blow up on impact if shot taken was very close and velocity was still high

I don't shoot a 338 mag, but I've had zero issues with eldm's at muzzle velocity (2600fps). I doubt eldx's would be more "fragile"

I don't believe bullets "blow up"...do bullets fail occasionally? Sure. Do they "blow up" (vaporize?) upon impacting tissue? Doubt it.

No, I agree. They do NOT vaporize on contact. I should choose my words more wisely
