I would like to thank all for the great input to my hunt as you can see, I was blessed to harvest a great Mule Deer Buck. The 300 RUM shooting Nosler Accubond 180gr did the trick easily, distance was only 426 yrds so not that stretched for the territory. This is a public draw deer hunt, so I am proof that it can happen if you put in the time and effort to scout. There are great maps these days that make it easy to figure out scouting and hunting strategies. Good luck out there my friends. View attachment 411630View attachment 411631

I never had problems finding great mullies up there but most of my shots have been from 20-150 yards. Usually on the western slope! Nice buck. What kind of spread did he have?

all I can say is WOW! From needing cartridge advice, to telling us how easy it is, to dropping a pig like that. I don't even know where to begin. Lucky or skilled, it eats the same. Congratulation!

Best caliber to me, is the gun I carry the most comfortably, but is also my most accurate and dependable gun. After all, if you put the proper bullet in the proper location, it will not matter if it was a 6mm or .50. A .50 caliber hole in the deer's left toe does not take him down.

I am a South Texas deer hunter and own many caliber of deer rifles, but I am going on a public draw deer hunt in Colorado and need to know what is a good all round caliber for Mule deer. I use a 300 RUM in Texas due to long Sendaro shooting out to about 600 yrds, but want some input for Mule deer in Colorado. I am under the understanding that altitude can effect preformance.

Yes, it can. Altitude will cause your cartridge to shoot flatter. You're living near sea level. I'm East of Colorado springs. My house sits at 7,200 feet. Your rifle will shoot around 8 to 10 inches flatter here that down around 1,000 feet. At 9,000 feet, you get a few inches less drop. Your .300 will be fine for mule deer. For that matter, a 300 winmag or a 30-06 will work fine. What unit did you draw in?

For me, .270 Win of the shot can be made within 300 yards ; 270 Weatherby Mag if you will be expected to shoot out to 600 yards. You will require a quality bolt action rifle, with a great scope, and Lots and Lots of range practice at those distances. No cutting corners, but it's all worth it!!! You will remember it the rest of your life!!!
