I'm kicking an idea around for a 7mm wildcat that truly splits the difference between a 7 RM and 30 Nosler, without a belt.

The obvious course of action is going with a 7-300 PRC but there's a few things I don't like about that option.
1. The capacity is getting up there at 96 grains.
2. I'm not a fan of the skinnier longer case length and 30 degree shoulder.

I really like what Nosler did with their case design, shorter/fatter and a 35 degree shoulder.
Also Peterson 33 Nosler brass has a capacity of 94.2 grains (according to their rep) so necking it down to 7mm would probably end up around 92 ish.

Has anyone played around with necking down the 33 Nos?

No I haven't. But I thought about it being a good middle ground 30 cal option. I didn't think it had 92 grains. I thought it was less. It would be a good 7mm. But personally over 85 grains for a 7mm and the throats move pretty good. But good brass options are a priority.

Yeah with certain powders you're 100% right.
I have found though that with H1000 its usually not an issue to creep up a little more into overbore territory. I've spoken with a handful of guys getting over 1000 rounds from 28 noslers with said powder.

Go for it, should be very good performance. I'm doing a 7 Norma for many of the same reasons and quality brass availability.

That'll be a screamer, although with lapua brass at 103 grains it'll probably be very close to 28 Nos capacity by the time you neck it down.
I'd bet you get 800 rounds out of it if you're using the right powder.
Keep us updated when you complete the build

If I get 800 rounds out of it I'm gonna throw a party! I've got enough N570 for about 20 barrels and I'm not afraid of a new barrel every year.

I guess everyone has their kicks but building a slower 28 nosler has no appeal to me.
Just go down to a 7prc then and call it a day

The appeal to me is getting good performance from a shorter barrel for suppressor use. The fastest cartridges with a long barrel are also the fastest cartridges with a short barrel, efficiency be damned.

I want 3000+ FPS with a 180 7mm in a 20" barrel using Lapua brass. 7/300 Norma is the easy button. OPs proposed cartridge would be similar.

Save the effort and just go 28 Nosler.

28 Nosler should do that no problem. save a bunch of head ache.
I do get the want of using the Norma case but I wouldn't be dinking around with the 33 Nosler but that's just me.

Do what makes you happy.
