HBN Bullet Coating

Longtine88 do you run a patch through before the first shot to even it out in the barrel?
No, after I get the bore clean, I dry it out good. Then wet a patch with Lock-Ease then I start at the throat good then work it to the end. I let it dry for a bit then dry patch it out good until I get a clean patch and put it up.

What was old is new again…
Ultra Fine/sub micron hBN is widely available and it's cheap.
To apply to bullets simply tumble in a rotary or vibratory tumbler. I use a vibratory tumbler and it takes about an hour. Place the bullets in a plastic container such as a pill bottle or a larger pain reliever container. Dosing varies depending on whether it's a new container or old, but somewhere around 1/4-1/2 teaspoon will get you started. Once an hour or so has passed remove the container and gently dump the contents (leaving loose hBN in the container) into a sock and remove the excess. The result should be a milky white bullet. They will be slick.
For barrel pre-treat I use 99.9% IPA (again cheap on Amazon) and add hBN until I get a milk like slurry. I then use a sponge produced by "Bore Tips" to swab the bore. A wetted patch will work. Draw the cleaning rod back and forth until full coverage is attained. *CAUTION* Pressure will spike for the first few shots. I'm usually fine after 3 rounds. Pretreatment isn't necessary as multiple rounds will coat the barrel. Clean up is standard although copper fouling should be minimal. I do suggest cleaning to bare metal prior to the first application.
I know I wrote a novelette but if you consider the timing of the steps it adds very little to the process. Clean up is SO much quicker that you get it back many times over.
Pressure is reduced so an adjustment in powder charge may be required. The bigger the bore the greater the effect on pressure.

I have used it for a few years now and it conditions the barrel like it was burnished with far less time, and bullets fired, to speed up a barrel.
It appears carbon is easier to remove and longer strings can be fired.
I don't shoot anymore, but all of my comp barrels built/made in 2020 have never seen an in coated bullet and throat erosion is still staying strong. No need to set-back at all.
You will never go back once you have shot an agg with it.

Cheers.

I use it to prevent cold bore flyers.
I like it for that. I pretreat with the alcohol slurry to avoid the pressure spikes of the first few rounds down a clean barrel. I do have to clean it out of the hollow points of my Absolute Hammers, so no Hammer trails. I didn't use it this time on the Shock Hammers in the 375 Winchester so maybe I'll get them this time.

Edit: if you do use it on Hammer hollow points rinse them good in IPA and let them dry. If you don't all of your HBN will be caked in the oil of your Hollow points and there won't be any left for coating the outside of the bullet. Ask me how I know.😉

That is exactly why I didn't use it on my hammers. I may venture back into it some day but I waste a lot of time already and that's another time consuming step.

I bought a kit last year and followed the instructions -- super clean barrel, coat with hBN on a swab, coat bullets and shoot. I wasn't satisfied with how well the bullets were being coated. Some were decidedly grey, others not so much. I decided to put it aside until I could figure out how to coat the bullets better. PS - I used a tumbler and steel BBs to coat the bullets. Just never felt like they were getting properly coated.
