I'm getting the chance to go on my first western hunt next year for muleys near Salmon, Idaho. I am going with some experienced people, yet none have hunted this particular area. I'm not sure of all the details yet except that I am definitely going. I was wanting to know the best camouflage to use in this area. I'm also not sure if it will be a early season or late season hunt, so if the patterns are different, please state that. I am trying to stick to Kuiu due to the overall weight, but I am open to other ideas as long as they are lightweight. I am mainly interested in the camo patterns for the clothing and the pack. Thank everyone in advance. -Will

Kuius standard camo will suit you just fine. In my experience camo pattern counts for very little as long as you don't wear large blocks of solid dark colors. Most of spot and stalk success lies in how you're moving and playing the wind. Moving slow into wind and not skylining yourself will get you 99% of the way there

I completely agree. Which colors do you consider the standard kuiu color line? Vias, verde, valo?

Granted I hunt deer a lot further north than ID but in SE AK the premier patterns are kuiu verde and sitka subalpine. They're fine even in moderate snow because you're usually hugging tight to trees any time you're exposed to the deer

Camo colors will absolutely not affect the outcome of your hunt.

Get into the best shape possible. Do buy some quality clothing that will dry quickly and keep you warm and comfortable. Kuiu, Sitka, whatever floats your boat.

Don't pack too much stuff. Have an experienced buddy go through your pack and make sure you don't have too much packed.

Get a lightweight (but quality) pack, sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, tent. These items plus clothing will account for the most weight in your pack.

Shoot for total pack weight with food, water, gun, etc 50lbs or less. Otherwise you will be spent by the time you reach camp and have a tough time actually hunting from there.

IF hunting in Sage, Cheat grass / Rocks, etc.,. I use Open Country Camo with, a EXO Pack on back and, a Kifaru "Gun Bearer" for my Rifle ( My Pack has a nice, Orange strip on, the Top / Back, area ) and I put my light weight Hunter Specialties, "Shooting Stix" in one of, the Pouches ( and use, a strap ).
This set-up, allows me to use, my Hiking / Trekking Poles, Range Finder and Bino's. ( I can Set up, with, Pack on, Thigh for "Toe Support", Rifle in Stix, Range animal and Shoot, in Sitting or, Kneeling positions,.. in 30- 45 Seconds ).
Pick a somewhat, Darker pattern IF,.. in Timber. Bring an Orange Hat, too ! Game See's, Movement,.. NOT color.
That part of, Idaho is STEEP and Dry country, so bring, Lots of Water ! Hope this,.. Helps

Looks like great advice all around. It is truly appreciated because I am inexperienced. I know enough to wade through the bs, and what y'all have given me sounds like sage advice to me. Thanks again and keep it coming!

My taxidermist lives in Salmon. From talking to him wolves have really reduced the deer population. Before you commit to a hunt there spend some time on the phone with a biologist that works for the fish and game and KNOWS that area. See what success rates look like. A lot of that country is steep, rough and rugged. I'm not saying don't go to Idaho. Just that there may be better options.

Camo is for looking good to other PEOPLE. Unless you're turkey hunting or early season archery elk or is utterly meaningless. I typically hunt in a black Grundens jacket
I've had moose at 20 feet, deer stare at me coyotes come into the call... do not sweat the small stuff. I work for an air taxi in Alaska. I get to see hundreds of hunters a year. It's a Kuiu and Sitka fashion show. Camo is a huge money industry. All of my Kuiu, Sitka and First lite is solid colors. I hate walking into a restaurant wearing camo.
