My father in law, father and I all recently bought each 300 ultra mags in the rem model 700 sps. Each has a leupold. We got together a month or so followed a break in procedure and now we are wanting to work up a load. next weekend we will get together again to shoot, so this week we all have the homework of loading some rounds to start with. we will also have the availability to reload at the same location that we will be shooting ( 5 minutes on the quad).

We all hope to shoot H-1000 and the 200 grain accubond. we all have measured the col to max length based on mag length. I have read most of the posts on the subject and there is some really great info! I just wanted to run my summary by all of you to see if I missed anything or if any rounds could be saved by doing something different.

200 grain accubond & H-1000

step 1
89 grains (2 shots)
89.5 grains (2 shots)
90 grains (2 shots)
90.5 grains (2 shots)
91 grains (2 shots)
91.5 grains (2 shots)
92 grains (2 shots) = max load in book i am using
total = 14 shots
step 2
pick best two groups from step 1 and shoot a 5 shot group each?
total= 10 shots
step 3
pick best group from step 2 and load in .2 grain increments on either side of it and shoot these in 3 shot groups to find sweet spot?
total = 6 shots
total shots = 30

Not sure of what the rifles are capable of, but my question is? with this method should we able to find the best possible load for each rifle. or rather, is it likely? any help is greatlty appreciated. sorry so long of a post!

With a rum you may be able to call it good if you just vary by 0.5 grain incriments. I would substitute COAL changes for Step 3. Also, I would shoot 3 shot groups for step 1 and 2 - 5 shot groups each load for step 2 but that is just me.

+1 to what Britz said.
Move up in .5 grain increments, and shoot 3 shot groups all while measuring case stretch. With the RUM, you will be stuck with an OAL of 3.600, so there's not much playing with seating depth. If this set up is for longer ranges, don't wast much time at 100 yards. Pick something that looks good and go right to 300 yards. Do your load development there.

thanks for the input, I appreciate it and will do as suggested. on my oal, set just short of my mag length but with plenty of clearance for hunting situations my measured oal is 3.649. since i cannot go bigger, does it ever make since to play with the oal by shortening it?

Thanks again.

Yes ther are some loads that shoot good loaded way out there and some that need to be seated deeper youl just have to see what works for you! and +1 for what britz said!

Well, we got two out the 3 guns dialed in yesterday. one is still at shawns getting a brake installed, so we will have to do that one later. at any rate, one (mine) actually my wifes (her present for letting me get the edge built), really liked 90.5 grains. at 200 yards it grouped 3 into a nice 1.55 inch group, while the other loads went from a little bigger to about 3 inches for the biggest group. I went back to the bench and loaded up 15 more shells at 90.5 grains. Went back out shooting and shot several 3 inch groups at 100 yards that varied from .655 to .801 inches. The weather. so far I am very happy with that. the other gun (my father in laws) seemed to like 91 grains. The wind was starting to pick up, very little so we only got through the first round with his and we only shot at 100 yards. it group all the loads at 1.1 inchs or larger at 100 yards execpt for the 91 grains, it grouped at .781. we loaded up some more in that load, but didnt get to shoot them.
One wierd thing happed on both rifles. it shot the 90 grain load a couple of inches lower than the all the other loads. when it happed to me, I figured I had aimed at the sticker below, but the same thing happed when my father in law shot his. any ideas?

Anyway, I considered the day a success (minus the scope bite i got on my first shot) and I appreciate all the good info.

thanks again.

I'm guessing barrel harmonics . the bullet is leaving the barrel when it is pointed down . I have an ultra light and sometimes my point of impact changes a fair amount with a minor change in ammo . Jim
