I moved close to $30K out of my 401K and into firearms in 2008. No regrets. The only benefit I've found of getting old is no early withdrawal penalty. 2009 looks ripe for a repeat. Some prices are high because of the stampede but there are some also some good deals on used guns. None of it is for hunting. I prefer watching woodland critters to killing them. I have deer in my yard nearly every day.

Answering this kind of poll tends to make me sick. It kind of makes you put the numbers together and be somewhat accountable for you spend on this sort of stuff.
Last week I bought two new ARs and 5 Rock River lowers. That kind of threw me right out of this one. The week before I customized a Buckmark with trigger parts, barrel and other odds and ends. I am planning to follow Jerry's outline and build a Savage this year. Just geting into hand loading, so I'l probably hit your top number again there.

Geeze, my wife is going to kill me.

Then the "wants" start. Want to get the Savage cleaned up and accurized while I am out of the country. No idea on price or time, so add that to the list. Leapers scope($60) and rings($30?) for the airgun to leave at grandma's house. Want some more .223($200), and .308($200) ammo. Also want to do a .243 barrel for the Savage($100), and then ammo for it($200). A mag extension for the Savage would be $90. 10-22 to 10-17 conversion at $2-300, and then maybe a 77/22 mag($4-500) with a 17 barrel($150?), and then ammo for those three calibers($500?)

and I am above $2500 easily. Have never spent this kind of money, even when we were REALLY into guns. I can blame it on the fear of not having the ability to do it after this year.

Less than $1000.
I am going to get a scope mount and rings, reloading dies and assorted items for my 30-30.

But my main purchase will be either a Savage in 300 Win Mag (package), or a Weatherby Vangard in 300 Weatherby Mag. I wish I could afford the Weatherby Mark V 30-378 Mag, that is the one I really want. I wish I could get a Vangard in 30-378 Mag!

I'll probably get the Savage package, that way I'll already have a scope, rings and such. Then I'll just need reloading dies and assorted items on my wishlist.

Hey Just ,I picked up a sav 300 wsm and it is great, it has the accu-trigger and with ww 180 gr. factory loads the silver box it shot moa out of the box. Also uses less powder than the 300wm and is not too bad on the shoulder when shooting off the bench.. I plan on reloading for it so it should only get better..

I'm lucky. My wife and I have free acess to over 2000 yds in South Carolina and Virgina. I reload so ammo is cheap and we have plenty of hunting gear. So $250 according to the parameters is about right.

The wife sure doesn't like it, but as I don't have a long ranger yet, I,m looking at 2.5 approx on my rifle and then hopefully a bit less on the optics, well that's the initial budget she knows of, plus planing on changing to a basic 7mm08 for general/bush hunting. Good thing is I'm moving to our South Island this year so it will mean a short drive in the 4wd a permit that's virtually free and that's me.
