270 win bullet selection

Thanks everyone for the info.i have on hand 130 gr patition,140 gr seirra hpbt,130 seirra game kings,140 gr classic hunter,140 gr interlocks 130 gr Speer gold dot or hot cores can't remember and maybe one or two others.also thought about trying 145 gr eld x?
That 140 Sierra HPBT is intended for large animals. It is a tough bullet. It wouldn't be my first choice for deer. Any of the others should be fine.

Hello all I'm in process of working up and good load in my late grandfather 270 win that he gave to me and I'm wouldn't about what bullets to use this will be for deer from up close say 15 to 20 yards out to maybe 300 maybe more just depends. I have everything from 130 gr bullets to 150 gr bullets. What makes me hesitant about what bullets to use is in the past with any 270 I've used and people I know have used is for some reason behind shoulder shots result in no expansion and bullets go straight through and I've personally helped track more deer that had been shot with 270 and never found at anything 100 yards and in and this has been my experience more with 270 than any other cartridge. I would like to use 130 gr partition or hammer bullets of some type. What have yall had good luck with from up close to far in 270 with behind shoulder shots? Thanks
With average size deer, the partition-style bullet is most likely to do that "pas-through" you complained about. what you want is a controlled expansion bullet that opens quickly without (hopefully) blowing up on close shots.

The best performance I've had in this regard is the Speer Grand Slam bullet, with both short and longer shots, it just properly opened every time.

Honestly If you put nearly anything through both lungs or through the juncture of the heart lung region you'll have a dead critter shortly.

I've killed elk, bear, deer and goats (in Wyoming antelope are referred to as goats) with bullets as frangible/soft as SGK's and NBT's and as tough as TSX's and NPT's to include Keith bullets I poured from "hardball."

My biggest bullet concerns have been failure to expand and/or over penetration. My stands are on trails that the herd passes between feeding and bedding. Even using SGK's trying to limit pass through I've failed to recover many bullets having had full penetration.

I'm very careful to watch for a second set of legs sprinting up next to my target animal on the off-side and haven't hit any "by-standers" to date. But there's always the chance.

I used to shoot Sierra 90 grainers @ 3500fps out to 250 yards and Sierra 110 grainers at 3200fps for longer shots. Both were like the hammer of Thor struck them. Unfortunately, Sierra discontinued both of them. That is just 2 of the reasons I don't buy Sierra anything anymore. Now I just shoot plain old Speer 115 grain gold dots when I can get them or 130 Ballistic Tips. So, with that said, I think a 130 BT would serve you well. Another interesting bullet is the Hornady 120 grain SST. I never tried them, but I'd bet they'd do what you require. Actually, MidSouth has them in stock right now.

I used to shoot the 130 grain Suerra Game Kings as they were super accurate in my rifle. That was until I had a batch that penciled as mentioned earlier. Switch to the 150 grain SST and have not had any issues with expansion since.

With about 40 years experience with the 270 I've used 130/140/150 grains Speer/Hornady/Barnes with H4831 & IMR4350 with no problems on deer, elk or moose. Just match your components to the game and stay within their & your limits. 😊

Under 300 bc is not a issue. Push a 130 Nos bt or a Berger at 2900+ fps if you want maximum damage. Ive had a completely different experience with my 270 wsm, going at just over 270 win speeds, ~3042 fps with a 130 Nos bt and Berger's. With a Nos bt or Berger its too explosive. Am going to a 129 LRX to stop the damage. A Berger shot in a 120 # doe at about 100 yards broadside/double lung dropped her in her tracks, but the explosive wound channel blew through the diaphragm and ruptured the stomach causing a mess. And a muley buck shot with a 130 berger quartering hard to me in the front shoulder turned that whole shoulder into hamburger. A 130 Nos bt shot into a cow elk quartering hard to at 100 yards hit at the base of neck, the bullet went just under hide blew up a hole as big as my fist and then penetrated about 22-24", stopping at the last rib on opposite side. She went 49 paces with a so so hit really. Bullet went just over top of the lungs, but the initial fist sized hole destroyed the arteries to the brain. And collapsed the diaphragm as well. I loaded some 130 Interlocks for a buddy's 270 win, he shot a muley buck at 383 yards in the neck, cuz he didnt hold for the 25 mph wind, it hit the spine and it ricocheted a bit and exited causing a quarter sized exit wound. Imo any one of the 3 mentioned would work for you.

I've used Sierra , Hornady ,Speer Nosler Barnes and all the variants of cup and core fast expanding too controlled expanding and they all will kill a deer . It's just that every now and again when something weird happens that is totally out of my control that I don't like about those type bullets . I ve had complete blow ups on shoulder bone , entry wound with no exits on Partitions when you should have one , perfect behind shoulder shot a few drops of blood then no blood trail etc , etc , then along came Hammers I accidentally stumbled on a you tube video of Steve and some friends and family members on a African Safari, wow I was impressed. I called Steve ordered some Hammers and could not believe how easy the load development is , they are faster grain for grain 100 fps from the get go , virtually no fouling accurate as heck , the best terminal performance you could ask for , no limitations too shot placement , in the vitals of coarse shoulder or behind the shoulder , absolutely no blood shot meat etc. The Hammer bullets perform the same everytime no surprises, The OP stated he was looking for a Partition or a Hammer bullet of some sort , too try in his 270 the 117 gr Hammer hunter will cover all the bases point blank too 1800 fps impact vel . I would be surprised too get 3400 fps plus from the 270 loaded too it's potential with the 117 gr Hammer

Correction I would not be surprised if I got 3400 fps plus with the 270 loaded too it's potential with the 117 gr Hammer.

I've been using 140 gr Berger classic Hunter, Ramshot Hunter 55.5 gr, leave the muzzle at 3035 fps and groups sub MOA in my factory Winchester Sporter. Deadly deer.
Yup,.. the 140 gr. Classic Hunter's, Kill like, the "Hammer of, Thor" on Elk !
Boiler Room OR,.. High Shoulder,.. AWESOME, bullet !!
I shot THRU a Bull at 115 Yards, High Shoulder hit, thru BOTH Shoulder blades and Hides ( Mush, in the lung area ) bullet Base was tangled up, in the Hair on, the Far side. Ka-Pow,.. Hooves, in the Air !
A great, and extremely accurate bullet for, Deer or, Elk !

Idaho Iefty what would that bullet do at point blank range say 15 or 20 yds reason for asking , my assumption is the 140 gr classic hunter would be in the same category as the Sierra game king , not sure and stand too be corrected . I shot a South Texas buck in my younger years high shoulder and the bullet blew up exposing the shoulder blade , lm talking a pie plate patch of hair gone with the shoulder blade exposed no penetration the second shot in the neck running did the job . That is what turned me off of fast expanding cup and core bullets among a few other incidents. The bullet mentioned was a 130 gr Sierra game king shot from a 270 win.
