My 6 mm rem and custom 280 ai are both Ruger 77 are really great shooters. Just not as nice as the tikka. My 77/22 is perfect

Just the model 77 in roberts is really bad

My experience with Ruger is very limited so I shouldn't be so harsh against them as Bill Ruger was really a great pioneer for sporting arms and put a lot of thought into the engineering aspect of firearms. Their are so many variables to cover to get some rifles to be accurate and even when all the bases are covered certain rifles are what they are. Your Tikka .280 Remington is a tuff to beat combo for any game.

If your rifle in quesiton is a smaller caliber like .243 or .25 I probably wouldnt be shooting much past 300 yards for deer or hogs, even with a 1/2" rifle.

I prefer not to shoot past the range that my rifle shoots larger than 4" groups and it has to be able to maintain first shot consistancy.
For me, it helps keep it clear and clean to know my max range conditions for the particular rifle I'm carrying.
If I'm within the range then i just need to make sure i'm okay with the wind and the position i build to shoot.
I have one place in eastern MT where the wind is consistant, yet unpredicable with gusts and vernturis in quite a few spots.
My most accurate rifles are capped to 500-600 yards because of it.

You might of heard it from me before and asked the same question. There are two possible reasons. One smith told me that the bullets didn't fully stabilize at 100 yards and did later on. But Byran Litz doesn't believe it's possible. He believes that it's a possible parallax issue. Either way I've had several of my friends shoot it and we had the same results.

Yeah probably. Seems like I forget more than I remember these days. Parallax or something else you haven't thought of seem more likely. It's like the "cold weld" thing people talk about. I believe they have an issue but I think its impossible cold weld is the issue unless someone can explain how that works...

This would be my remedy, I love my Ruger .44 mag blackhawk but I'm not a fan of Ruger rifles outside of the No.1 and No.3. I'm certain there's a legion of M77 owners who have done very well with their rifles over the years, but a Tikka is an easy fix for out-of-the-box accuracy.

Tikka rifles have their own issues. They tend to be decently accurate though.
One of my most accurate rifles is a m77 Hawkeye in 35 Whelen. In the right hands it is capable of 1/3 to 1/2 moa.

I have a light weight Ruger that only shoots 1 to 1 1/2 two shot groups. How far can I shoot deer or hogs and still make ethical hits

Curious about if you have a specific distance that you'd like to shoot a deer or hog at. Also what cartridge are you asking writing about?

I think he means there is a constant wind but it has gusts vs no wind then a sudden gust of wind.

However, I wish to point out to the OPer that he has not indicated his ability to read the wind and that a 2 shot 'test of accuracy' is not valid. Try 5 shots to see if the 1 to 1-1/2 MOA still holds.

Shot it many times. No wind. The reason for two shots is it is a really light weight barrel that over heats. Guess I need to take xtra time and let it cool completely between shots

If a rifle can't fire 3 times in quick succession and not shift POI... it is worthless.

My opinion is based on the assumption that the caliber you are using is actually acceptable and adequate for Deer Hunting.!!! I didn't catch what your Ruger is chambered in. ( 270win; 280; 30-06?? ) If you have a Rifle /Load /Scope rig that you can shoot CONSISTENTLY in to 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards, then that set up should shoot into 3 inches ay 200 yards and about 5 inches at 300 yards. Thats a deer's heart , and clearly, its lungs. I ( Personally ) would stop there, and a broad side shot, if its not really windy , between 275 and 300 yards would be MAX for me. Just personal opinion!!
