7mm-08 barrel length

Do you gain much velocity going to a 24" barrel vs the standard 22" barrel in 7mm-08?

Unlikely - the 7mm-08 is a very effecient cartridge. If you handload and can get a hold of of some CFE-223 you generate velocity in the mid 2800s with 140 and a 22" bbl. If your looking foremore than that, then the 7mm-08 is probably the wrong platform.

Additionally, you need to consider that you may get a fast bbl versus a slow a barrel and any particulat barrel may like a slower charge versus a faster charge. An example - 22" 30-06 shoots 168 grn TSX into 5/8" at. 2825 H4350, my 23 inch 308 win shoots them into 2/3" at 2815 CFE-223.

I am gueesing you are l0oking for a lighter weigth all around rifle. You are probably looking at 50 fps max which is irrelevant IMO.

I have had over a dozen 7-08's , Reloaded for them all and reloaded for probably a half a dozen more for friends and relatives. It is my favorite cartridge and has been since the late 80s. This said, lately I have started trying the newer powders …by lately I mean the last 10 years or so. RL 17 consistently gives me the most velocity at about 2900 ft./s in a 24 inch barrel 1:9 twist with a 140 grain bullet. Power Pro 2000 is a close second as well as CFE 223. Not the most accurate of any of my loads but definitely the highest velocity and under 1MOA regardless.

I'm currently building a 7mm-08 with a 24" finished barrel because I like less muzzle blast, and I like how the rifle balances with a slightly longer barrel, but not too long. The rifle will be used for deer and antelope in open sagebrush country. I have pack rifles with barrels as short as 20", but I don't find them as enjoyable to shoot. To me it comes down to the application and personal preference.

This is it. 7-08 works well with 22" barrel and if looking for a little extra velocity drop down to the 120 grain bullets.

According to QL, a max load with a 140 Nosler BT loses 52 fps from 24" to 22".

Agreed, I like the balance with the 24" barrel.

Been using this cartridge for 35+ years and have never liked the 22" barrels. I do most shooting off hand and 22" or shorter are less stable. Use 24" for hunting and 26" for silhouette competition.

it'll come down to personal preference. Try some rifles in 22" and then some in 24" and see what works for you. Velocity wise you'll gain between 30 and 50 fps max.
