I see so many of these hunters on T.V. carrying a backpack while hunting whitetails and I can't figure out what all they need to make it through the day that they would have to have a backpack to carry it in. I always have a extra release, flashlight, grunt call, can call, gutting knife, gloves and facemask, limb saw, rangefinder and all of that fits into a 7 pocket fannypack. So I'm wondering if you guys wear a fannypack or backpack? And if you wear a backpack what all is in it?

Hunting public lands may involve a 3 mile hike in the dark before you ever think about hunting. For that you should be prepared to spend the night in the woods because it can happen. Also, people would think your nuts if you expect to drag an animal out of those places. If your hunting rural areas/private land with woodlots and roads in the area, you need less.

I use a Badlands Superday pack for day hunting on big public land tracts. It contains calls, knives and tags, GPS,rangefinder, HUGE binoculars, spotting scope and collapsible tripod, food, 3L camelbak, extra water bottles, heavy gloves, extra beanie, fleece neck gaiter, flash light, box of shells (if gun hunting), small trauma kit and I carry my thicker outerwear so I don't sweat while stalking. I usually carry a pistol in the holster on the belt as well. I'm usually 2-3 miles minimum from the truck and bad weather can blow in quick in western OK, so I like to be prepared. For hunts on 150-200 acres of private land, I carry much lighter.

I live in southeastern Idaho & the majority of my hunting is in very thick country. We also have a bunch of grizzly bears. The 2 most important items to me are a water filter & good fire starting material. Next is a gps unit & bear spray. Sometimes I carry a 45 auto but I feel spray is more effective. Never had to use either one but a few govt. hunter friends that deal with grizz say spray is best. I average about 6 miles per day hunting black bear, deer & elk. You can only carry so much.
Hope this helps,
Thanks, Kirk

Medium internal frame pack or external frame pack for hauling out quarters. Depends on distance to vehicle and size of game hunted.

Many others have described my average hunt on pubic land. In Georgia I want two liters of water in a backpack and a Lifestraw. I need at least 50 ft of rope to rig deer drags and cope with terrain on the way out. Salty snacks, lighter, first aid kit, a backup btry for my phone, phone, bug spray. Very often I go in wearing long johns, shirt, heavy sweater or coat because I will be doing a slow sneak in the cold after waiting motionless for dawn. By the time I come out, especially if I am lucky, it will be in the eighties and I will often be shirtless with a light orange string vest and finishing a 1.5 mile drag over rough terrain. The clothing has to go somewhere. The pack has a pocket for carrying a bow or rifle.
On my belt, in a small emergency kit that is never taken off, I have an emergency beacon, lighter, compass, and a folding knife.
I have to plan to be delayed because I am getting slower at 74.

Good list Len's got just tweak it to your liking. For where I hunt wt it's a little much and I was in the marine's and didn't and still don't like to carry a 70# pack !

I tried to find the list and I tried to write the ADMIN. I could not do either. I would really like to compare his list to my Army Airborne list :).

I bought a beacon years ago after getting three stents. I figured if I went down in the country I hunt, they would never find the body. Since then I have had several new problems that the docs keep fixing and I can run six miles before breakfast if i want to, but the beacon is a comfort.
