Talk to me about 8mm cartridges and bullets

Got my eyes on another old BRNO bolt gun in 8mm mauser on auction but don't care what cartridge you shoot, 8mm mauser, 8-06, 325 wsm, 8mm rem mag….

These aren't very common at all as the 30 cal is so close and so popular BUT it seems like there is a certain X factor to the 8mms, don't know what it is…and now I want this old 8x57 and just figured I'd open up dialogue.

Any 8mm-anything shooters on here? What do you like or dislike about the caliber? Advantages or disadvantages Compared to 30 cal?

What projectiles in this diameter stand out as winners or favourites to you?
While we can't help you just yet, I'm a sucker for the 8mm caliber. Barring anything unforeseen, we will have you covered next year, probably about this timeframe. We want to help keep this caliber and the cartridges that run it alive.

Also as I get older and with a 65% rotator tear in my shooting side shoulder, I have gravitated to rifles with muzzlebrakes and smaller calibers with less recoil.
For the performance you get, the 8 mag is actually pretty tame on the recoil side but nothing I want to go and shoot 20-30 rounds a day anymore either
I believe that about the recoil not being so bad as you'd think. While they are notably more powerful the medium bore magnums aren't half as scary as those who've never shot them think they are. I have a new-to-me .358 Norma Magnum and was surprised at what a sweetheart it is to shoot. I mean i wouldn't like to shoot strings from prone all day that's for sure but it's really not bad at all.

So I'm seeing lots of 8mm rem fans, good stuff!

Does anyone shoot that boring old slow 8x57?

Both Nosler and hornady have load data showing that in a strong action it's no slouch, neck and neck performance with a stiff .30-06…

Nosler lists a 200 partition just shy of 2700 fps. That's actually incredible efficiency and power for such a small case.

I had an 8x57 in a 700 Classic as well that shot 1/2" groups with 180 Ballistic Tips…sold it for about 2.5 X what I paid……it was just one of many rifles that duplicated performance of others and HAD to go

had a mint K98 that I sold years ago, still regret it to this day... guy wanted it so badly that he gave me 4 times what I paid for it .... but it still haunts me, I want it back

Have a very well used Turkish Mauser in 8x57 and a couple ammo cans of surplus WW2 ammo, haven't shot it in years ... maybe it's time to go burn some FMJ's
