water canteen for hunting

I was told from someone spending all day out there that carrying one large bladder or bottle create a lot of weight. They suggested using a filter straw or pump. But the problem with that is you may not always be near water
That's why I bring both. The bladder can stay in my big pack at spike camp if there are water sources available during the hike/hunt to fill the bottle.
I like to use the Kuiu hydration rig with the bino harness when not using my large pack when I know there won't be water source when away from camp.

Baboom.......someone's thinking and experienced:)

Side note, I like Nalgene as they're tough but heavy. Can be easier to take a case of h20 to camp and toss in 3 or 4 20 ounce bottles a day and yet less over all weight to carry.

Bladders can be nice, but if the line freezes you're hosed..............get it

Platypus bags can be ok, a lot like bladders but line to freeze up
The freezing is the worst. I've taken the hose (with the fabric liner which doesn't help) and just tucked it inside so it would be between the pack and me. Can't sip from it like that but at least it would thaw and not freeze.

I carry a bladder, but have a nalgene w/ survival odds and ends in it so it's not empty space.

I also carry a sawyer squeeze system to filter water

I have broken a bladder in the woods before so make sure I have something else just in case.

One edit and thing to add, the sawyer squeeze bag could also serve as a backup water container if my water bladder broke again, but having the nalgene is a good backup IMO, even though I carry it empty. I can drop an iodine tablet in and dip water out of a source if I get in a pinch.

any suggestions on a water canteen for all day elk hunting? I'm a Yeti fan while they have lots of options for bottles but how much water do you weight yourself down with and what is the best way to carry water while hunting?
Mine was a water bladder that was hung inside the pack, I believe it holds 2 liters and the drinking stem comes out the zipper and I laced it thru the shoulder supports for easy accessibility.

A friend gave me a new Camelback day pack. But I've never used it. Grandkids will probably inherit it. For my personal use in the 1970s Wal-Mart (Sky City then) sold some whisky bottle shaped plastic "flasks". I have several I have used for years for just a quick outing. Hunting trips 2 military canteens and a heavy duty water bottle.

You might want to try it. It will hold as much as your two canteens and puts the weight near your center of gravity. And, you'll have a good place for your heavy duty water bottle if you want that too.🙂

I use a bladder but I also always bring a nalgene size soft, silicon bottle. I always worry about regular Nalgene bottle making noise if it's half full. Plus Taking up space with a hard bottle is an issue
