45 ACP on Brown Bear.????

watched recent videos on charging bear..... he used a 10mm....
wondered if anyone uses or has had or experience with a 45 acp for self protection...???
Why, saw one Brown with half the scull shot off and they tracked it for 5 miles. Lucky they had to track it and not some looking for them.

I read most of the replies and formed an opinion. (I know, everyone has one)
You can probably kill a Brown Bear with almost any weapon you choose, if you have the skill to use it and the time to use it.
It seems to me that the stories about amazing kills are really stories about shooting ability and the cool to perform under pressure.
Likewise, the failures, reguardless of caliber or game, often suggest poor shot placement or surprise.
The answer would seem to be that you shouldn't let yourself be surprised, you should use terrain and cover to protect yourself until you have a chance at an effective shot because closer is better, and you should carry the weapon that is appropriate for your ability.
I will probably never see a Brown Bear in the wild but if I do, and I am armed, it will probably be with a .45 because at 74 I am comfortable with the weight and my ability to use it. There is little doubt that it will be my backup since I am primarily a rifle and bow hunter, but like my emergency kit, the .45 is never taken off because what good is a backup that isn't there?

So after reading all 8 pages of this I can say most people don't advise a 45 ACP for bear protection. But, isn't it better than nothing? If someone asked 45ACP or nothing I would think most people would agree with 45ACP? Or would you say forget the gun and buy a can of spray?
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Going hunting in grizz country for the first time this year. I was thinking of loading up some hard cast or copper LD penetrators 250grn 45 colt (judge) to carry. It's the largest pistol I have. I also have a 40, 357 SIG, 9mm, 380, and 22 pistols. Should I leave all of them at home and just replace with spray?
Why not take both ?

I carry a Glock 20 10mm when archery hunting in Montana. I have heard stroys about the 45acp not penetrating deep enough on a grizzly bear. The 45acp is fat and slow is what I was told, and the 10mm is a little smaller in diameter and quite a bit faster. I use 200 grain or heavier full 10mm loads I think my 200-grain bear loads are going somewhere around 1350+ fps

What are you using to push them that fast? What bullets are you using? I dialed a load back for my 10mm after I popped a primer and bulged some cases. I'm getting 1150, after backing off 1.5grs. I think I was close to 1300 but I don't really want to load anymore. I know where safe is for my gun and I could possibly go up another grain from where I settled.

Bring bear spray too, I always carry both. Of those, I'd get some Buffalo Bore, or make some, for the 40, depending on what it is.

carried a 45ACP in NAM for 2 yrs as a 95B in Saigon and many another places up North and they do work as advertised plus more. I now have many 45's from several Colt Gold Cups modified- Randels -Springfields-Sigs- S&W love them.
But for bear in Alaska my 4 in S&W 44 Mag with full power house loads is my back up if not carrying a 12ga shotgun.

Now that is good info.
Thank You..
Glad the info helps, I should have added at the time if you really want to shoot a spicy Glock 10mm you probably should think about changing a few things out. #1 barrel, I went to the KKM "supported" barrel works like a dream, #2 recoil spring and guild rod I went with Long Wolf 20 lbs it takes the snap of the slide movement and recoil, way down. #3 sights, good fiber optic, and tritium a lot a bear encounters are low light. #4 a good feeling flat trigger like Ranger Proof Swag triggers, #5 light... an option. Ok, now with 15+1 10mm Underwood in the pistol, and if that doesn't get the job done, well... like always you should've brought a .12ga with slugs. ;)
