COYOTE ATTACK ON HUMAN AND DOG

From some of the DNA studies being done there aren't very many purebred coyote left especially in the eastern United States they say for the most part they are crossed with Grey wolves and the Red wolves depending on where they are located northern ones have more of the grey wolf mixes and the farther south they are the more Red wolf in them . There is no doubt in my mind that both cross' will change the hunting traits of the resulting animals .

More yote tails:

Years ago I hunted private land in WA state for mule deers. There were fleets of yotes patroling the area continually. Looking at individual deer with binocs, I saw indications of wounding in deer back-sides & back rear legs. Finally I managed to shoot a good size buck, examination showed many scars on that deer's rump. Among the numerous gray colored yotes there was a real big chocolate brown colored canine - yote hybrid??

The next year a good size buck was shot by another at the same area. This was almost November and the antlers were in velvet. Checking out that buck showed he had no testicles.

Apparently the attack method was a pack assault at the back of the deer.

I used to fish for striped basses in Massachusetts. That particular spot was where a breach occured during a real bad NE storm between open ocean & inland sheltered bay. Big bass. That spot was about 400 yards south of a hi class resort/restaurant. One night, driving south about 50 yards north of the resort, a big yote slowly crossed the road - seeing the yote was in a marked cross walk, I slowed down, the yote snarled at us and disappeared behind bushes. I week later while slowly cruising south, just north of the resort main entrance I spotted the yote concealed in the deep shade behind a privet hedge. A steady stream of SUV's,Volvo's & some Mercedes' were unloading resaurant patrons and valet parking would park the vehicles to a big lot back to the side behind the resaurant. I could smell the cooking, see partially hiden trash cans, and hear humans enjoying food & drink. The hidden yote was about 50 feet away from the front entrance. Was the yote a terrorist or just a real smart & well fed yote? Would it charge out to snatch some lady's minture poodle.

A week later, fishing at a point out from the beach, I saw the yote some 400 yards away using 8X binocs, late day light. He/she was slowly walking along the road, heading for the restaurant. What would the yote eat after Labor Day should the restaurant close for the season? (Like don't worry it will find something)

Utah has a bounty. $50 if I remember correctly, on coyotes.
Another story. In the late 80s, I was the Director of Law Enforcement at Camp Roberts in central California. Black tail deer were common on the base, but so were kit fox. Now a kit fox is a spindly, pathetic excuse for a fox. In the 7 years I was there, the coyotes destroyed the deer herd because the Game Management greenies thought the kit fox might be mistaken for coyotes. As a result, no hotel hunting and both the kit fox and black tail deer suffered greatly.

Where I am there will often be a $25 bounty on coyotes but you can usually sell them for more than the bounty.

Neighbor down here had a coyote come eat out of his dogs bowl under his garage with the camera recording him for over two minutes.

I've lost several yard dogs to coyotes... mostly Jack Russels because they can get drawn deeper into the killing fields with their ferocity.
My two Texas Heelers (Heeler/ Austrailian Shepherd cross) do a great job keeping them away although we have long barking/growling standoff sessions at different times of the night.

We must have had a bad spring for coyotes. I've killed a couple about a month apart following my tractors while plowing and both had no hair/coat. They looked like those hairless cats with wrinkled skin.

Mange…seen that here, too. Contagious as all get out!

And yet another yote episode:

Fishing for stripers is real good on an outgoing flood tide. Just get there when tide crests and start casting.

Wifey & I had finished breakfast and arrived at the south end of the inlet that drained a huge marsh into Cape Cod Bay. The tide range is 7-8 feet at that point - lots of fast moving water and eaties from probably 500 acres of tributaries & marshes covered by 2-3 feet of water at hi tide washing out. Caught my first stiper there at age 5 - not stong enough to reel them in so a put the pole over my shoulder & walked away from water uphill on beach dragging the bass hooked onto 36 pound test line. Now its graphite fly rods, weight forward line, kelvar backing with 20 lb mono between fly line & backing, & a variety of streamers tied on 1-2/0 hooks.

We got our gear out, including lunch & soda & ice tea. Roast beef sandwiches, dijon mustard, mayo, lettuce tomatos, ice cold chunked melons, chips included. It smelled real good. As we headed down the beach towards the twin jetties I had a sense that we were being watched. About 100 yards down beach I looked back to see a yote following us just above the grass line. I missed my .22-.250 real bad. The yote kept its distance. We fished and caught 15-20 bass, none of them keepers (min length then 36 inches) & released them but we caught 4 good size plaice (legal size) that I filleted out. Scanning the grass line with 8X binocs I was able to pick out 2 pointy ears and a black shiny snout but the yote backed out when we passed. When we reached the parking lot, the yote was working on the plaice carcasses that we left, gulls were circling above. It would have liked the roasred beef better. Bear spray would have worked on the yote - Massachusetts is anti gun.

My coyote story, when out in the hills walking the dogs (German shepard and a Lab) had one come out and start yapping at my dogs about 200yds away. I had control of my dogs so no worries. But I later learned this is a ploy they use to lure in dogs with the pack waiting in the background to attack. So be aware even if you only see one.

Thats true and they will also send a bitch in heat out to to a male dog and draw him in to her and get attacked by the pack.
Even bow hunting I bring a 22 ruger handgun just for yotes.
All be carefull of coyotes, they have so many diseases in their mouths that just a bite could put you in the hospital.

Yep. That's exactly how I lost my dogs. Found mangled Jack Russells out in pasture within 75-80 yards from my house.
Had to bring one of my Texas heelers to the vet after getting bitten and torn up pretty badly.
