6.5 PRC with 147ELD-M

I'm running the 156's in my 6.5SS. I think it's 7 shots for 7 dead animals so far. I'm at 3000 fps. Load has been good for me. My red stag was a large stag horn wise and maybe the size of a yearling cow elk. I've killed deer that were almost as big as my stag.

Two years ago I shot the 147 eldm in a new custom 6.5 Prc for WT deer. 4 I shot kills. DRT. Two longest was 2 does. 400 and 410. No complaints at all. Just got tired of toting a 10.5 lb gun. After my mini stroke last year I bought a 6.5 as some say Need moor Waypoint lol. Last season I shot 143 eldx out of it. 4 shots all with in 150 yards. 4 DRT kills. Iv had no issues with the Hornady stuff.

I got drew on this Elk hunt in Wy this fall, so I'm having the custom light weight 6.5 Prc built. Never having used Berger's or reloading I figured getting set up and a load for deer. That's 99% of what I'll be hunting with it. By the time I get it, I won't have time to try different bullets. So it's the 140 Berger's for now. Next year I'll try the 156 eol's MAYBE!!! Lol

My new shooting stick is finally done and I will be starting the process of getting a hunting load worked up for New Zealand. I will be hunting Red Deer and Tahr in 2023. This is a bucket list hunt for me so I want to make sure of my equipment and my loads. The guide recommended the 147 grain ELD-M out of the 6.5. I have another 6.5 PRC that I am shooting 124 Grain Hammer Hunters out of but have only killed Antelope and a few does with it. My performance was great with the 124 grain Hammers on those animals but it seems to me to be a little light for Red Deer. Just my thoughts. I have no experience with Red Deer at all but am assuming they are about the size of a good cow elk. I also have no experience with the ELD-M. I had originally thought that I would go with the 140 Grain Berger Elite Hunters and they have worked well for me out of my 6.5 x 284 for animal in South Africa on up to Kudu sized game but the guide recommended the 147's so I thought I should ask the question.

What are your thoughts and experience with 147 ELD-M's on Elk sized game?

Good luck on your hunt!!!!👍

Last fall I did my hunting with a 6.5 PRC and factory Hornady 147eld match ammo. I only have two animals to go off of but both dropped dead right there. The first was an antelope at 550yds the bullet when right through the heart. I thought I made a good shot but it looked like I missed because I saw the bullet impact the hill beyond the antelope and he started running but then took a nose dive and fell down a hill and was dead. The bullet trashed the heart and lungs and exited with a half dollar sized exit hole. The second was a mule deer at 187yds and it was a faster kill with violent wounding. The bullet hit and trashed the whole chest cavity even blew up the esophagus. It also left a half dollar exit wound. The muley pulled up his legs and flopped to the ground dead.

Good Deal!!!! Great Pics 👍

147 ELDM, ADG brass, REM LR primer, H4831 54.2gr 2925fps, 2.977col. My friend and I shot two cow elk this year. 250 and 637 yards. There are better powders, I'm just using up this powder before moving to H1000.

I drew a Kansas wt tag this year and I'm planning to take my Clymr 6.5prc haven't fully decided on the bullet yet but so far it shoots everything I've tried really well, the only exception is the factory 143eldx….they are decent but not as good as the 124hh, 140vld, 147m or the 156. 150 lrab pretty good as well.

Easily make first round hits on smallish steel plates at 500

Scope is a kahles 3-18 with a custom turret for the 147m and it's dead on.

Picture with dime is the 124hh and h1000.

JMack,
How far off the lands are you on the 156's in your Clymr. That is what I have coming and I would love to shoot the 156's. Also if you don't mind what kind of velocity are you getting with them.

56.0 gr. RL26 w/156 Berger is my load also. What my CDS dial is made for on the VX6.
I have a box of 150 Nosler LRAB I want to try. The 142 LRAB shoot well.

I'll check when I get home later tonight. I never got a chance to run velocity on the 156 but it's on my to do list. When I get done I'll share

That is a very nice rifle, bro. Your hunt sounds exciting and I wish you success!
How far do you expect to shoot? The 147 ELD-M's seem to kill quite well and are great for longer ranges - maybe a bit messy for hi-speed close-up shots and not so good for non-ideal shot angles going through meat/bone. Having run them as well as the 124 Hammers, I can say with confidence that the 124 HH will easily out-penetrate the ELD-M. It is not an under-dog in any way. I ran a 123 AH through a large doe last year from my Sherman Max - entry centered through the left rear ham and exit just behind right front shoulder. Did much better than a similar shot made with a 7-LRM running 180 Hybrids near 3,000 fps. that didn't even reach the vitals. Both at 200 yds. Either will get the job done if you know their limits.
