The black grey squirrel

The Fox squirrel had several color phases. I live in GA too and have seen Fox squirrels in red , almost all white, almost all black, almost exactly the same color as a grey , and combos of all the above. The reason you don't see them together is , with the exception of the breeding season, Fox squirrels are territorial and live isolated lives . There are black phase grey squirrels too, although I've only seen 1 in my life around here. There are places further north , like parts of Ohio, where there are more black phase greys than grey phase greys .
You know when your in a Fox squirrels territory when they bark at you. They have at least twice the sound volume and a lot more "chop" in their sound. I've only ever shot 1 Fox, although I've had chances to shoot more. The one I shot was mistaken for a grey. It was August, so the leaves were still thick and I had been circling the base of a bug hickory tree , trying to find the squirrel cutting nuts. After a few minutes of scoping as I walked around the tree, I finally spotted the grey face. A quick shot balled him up and he fell . I was surprised at the heavy thud when it hit the ground . When I walked over to it, there was my only Fox squirrel on the ground. Grey on the main body and head , with a red under belly and underside of the tail.
I just don't shoot them . They are fairly rare around here and being loners , the population never explodes like the common grey . I have no problem with others shooting them . Id just rather enjoy watching them on the rare sighting. The blacks are the most common color locally.

Black squirrel story from Wisconsin. Still hunting with my muzzleloader when a black squirrel came down a tree. Took a quick shot and missed. About a month later I was hunting the same woods and spotted a black squirrel scrounging in the leaves. Took a fine bead and touched her off. Picked up the squirrel and found his right ear was missing along with a strip of hair. Apparently we had met before.

How about this squirrel from India. Three feet long. Malabar Giant Squirrel.

I was a Lineman for AT&T and before that a phone tech for few different company's. Seen a lot of squirrels. Running on cables . Running down poles . Scare the crud out of you. They had a thing for aluminum P clamps. Taste or what I don't know. Metal ones they left alone.

So we have all, different color squirrels, some 3' long ,and now
Aluminum eating squirrels, was their scat silver to!

I thought I had seen everything due to seeing two black squirrels , but now I'm looking for a multi colored ,3' long ,
Flying squirrel ,that only eats aluminum and hangs out by the barn.
