So, I rush ordered two different bushings and tried to today. They size the diameter of the neck to an appropriate dimension, but I'm concerned that they don't some the whole neck. Is this normal? I've adjusted the die all the way down to the shell holder, and it only sits about .190" of the neck.

Please see photo. I used a sharpie to.color the necks and stroked it in and out of the doe until it wore off to show how much of the neck is being touched by the die. The other piece of Brass is in the picture strictly for reference.

Please comment on whether thos looks normal.tpmyou guys that use these bushing dies regularly.

Most bushing dies allow you to adjust how much of the neck it will size. However, a bushing die does not size all of the neck. Usually a small portion of the neck by the shoulder junction remains unsized.
I usually position the bushing to go about 75-80% of the neck. I don't go all the way to the shoulder. RCBS Match Dies

My Redding FL dies do what yours do but the neck sizing bushing die can get the entire neck

I'm sure I'm over analyzing this, but it would seem like it could leave opportunity for runout when there is less than the dimension of one bullet diameter of the neck being sized.....the neck tension is great, somI suppose if the ESs are good amd the accuracy is there....Ill chalk it up to a lack of experience.

For what it is worth, the multiple people mentioned having some adjustability in how much neck they size. There is no adjustment in the Hornady Match die set as far as bushing depth goes.

You have the main body of the die. Insert bushing. Then you have a sleeve that screws in to hold bushing. Finally you have the stem for the recapping pin that screws into the sleeve. The sleeve adjustment should tighten it down so that the bushing barely moves when you shake it.

Yes there is, it's just not a very fine adjustment. Let me dig to see if I can explain better. It's the second spare nut on top that doesn't seem to do anything.

Honestly it depends on the die/bushing combo on how much the neck gets sized. I have some that do 75-80% and a couple almost get the whole neck.

Ideally you would want the pressure ring of the bullet to fall within the sized portion of the neck.

I said it wrong. On the Hornady you have to add a washer/spacer/o-ring under the first knurled knob. My Whidden die has a second lock nut built in.

You don't have to screw the knurled part in all the way. The bushing is self centering based on the bore of the die, and a mandrel after the bushing straightens it anyways.

Oh look, video. Yeah, at 1:20 don't screw it all the way in.
