G'day all,
Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what this black substance is in a new take off barrel?
I assume it was shot at the factory, but I cleaned this and it still is showing this black substance.

Cheers.

'Looks' like colloidal graphite, and not like natural carbon from firing.
I would hit it with J-Bs
Is it localized to one end or the other?
It starts in the chamber and goes all the way to the muzzle.
I have hit it with JB already.
I have never seen this before.
I polished the chamber with scotch brite and it didn't budge it. It is not rust or rust preventative, so am at a loss.

Cheers.

If that was a hammer forged barrel it,s common....
This barrel is a button rifled stainless barrel.
It's a take off from one of my Sendero's I had in storage. I didn't borescope it before putting it away in a silicon impregnated sock. I got it out to re-chamber it.

Cheers.

Its the new covid variant -- remavitis. Clearly it's extremely dangerous otherwise it never would have happened to a ss barrel. You'll need to check the temp on that barrel everytime you fire it. Make sure you put a muzzle cover on it so it won't spread, I hear it's highly contagious .....I think they will have a booster shot available for it soon. It doesn't show up on current otc at home tests so you'll have to report to your local atf office for testing and registration. You will be required to get a large red "V" tattoo on your forehead so we all know you have been vacinated and are safe to fire that without fear of spreading it to all of our guns. And make sure you wash your hands correctly and drink lots of alcohol --- as we all know alcohol fixes everything.

🤪

With these smallish pictures, it looks like a stain in the barrel metal, and not something that is sitting on top of the metal. Do you get the same impression? I'd be curious what firing a few bullets would do. It doesn't look to me like it'll affect the barrel's performance.

I hear JB is just as good, but I've found Iosso will remove just about anything. If you want it gone, you might try that as your next step.

I have no freaking idea what it is.
I can't get Iosso here in Australia, but have plenty of JB, been using it for some time on my barrels. I keep getting told to go easy with it, but it's not like I clean my barrels every time with it or after every 20 shots either.
I can't see it being anything nasty, it will probably disappear when I run the barrel in, just curious as to what it could be.

Cheers.

You might try some CLR it wont hurt anything
That was my next step.
I am re-chambering this barrel to 7STW over the weekend, my other barrel is already at half life I have shot it so much recently. So, I thought this could be a spare barrel.
I'll take some pics after I run some CLR through it.

Cheers.

Is the finish on the outside Melonite of some sorts. The barrel could have been plugged at both ends when the finish was applied and some seeped in. Remington did do some form of Melonite on a couple higher end models that the actions and barrel were made of stainless.

Oxidation is the most likely culprit.

In time it will wear/polish out. If you're deeply concerned have a talk with the gun or barrel maker if it's a custom.
