You can be consistent at 1000 with a .308, I know because I have done it.

So far I looked at three Kimber 84M 308 Win and they all has "sub moa" guarantees from Kimber. I'd say that's good enough to plink out to 1k.

Did it with an 8.5 lb 20" .308 shooting the same load at 2475, a little less ballistics, and took a little more concentration to shoot well, but still very doable. I do understand your point though, heavy guns are easier to shoot, no denying that, but that certainly doesn't mean it's impossible.

It might be difficult to hit a 10" plate at 1000 yds with light 308, but I would slap Vx5Hd 3-15x44 on it and have great time trying. It would be a pleasure to carry both in field and to the range.

USMC got it done a long time on the .308, teaching guys to 1000.... Best cartridge for the job nope, doesn't matter.
